CHILDS, BREVARD S.
The Struggle to Understand Isaiah as Christian Scripture. ISBN 9780802827616
Cambridge, William. B. Eerdmans Publishing Company, 2004. 332 pp. Fine copy. Hardcover with dustjacket. A key emphasis of Brevard Childs's distinguished career has been to show not only that the canon of Scripture comprises both Old and New Testaments but also that the concept of ''canon'' includes the way the Christian church continues to wrestle in every age with the meaning of its sacred texts. In this new volume Childs uses the book of Isaiah as a case study of the church's endeavor throughout history to understand its Scriptures. Bible ISBN: 9780802827616

COLLINS, JOHN J.
The Bible After Babel: Historical Criticism in a Postmodern Age
Grand Rapids, Michigan, William B. Eerdmans Publishing Company, 2005. X, 201 pp. Very good copy. Softcover. Biblical scholars today often sound as if they are caught in the aftermath of Babel -- a clamor of voices unable to reach common agreement. Yet is this confusion necessarily a bad thing? Many postmodern critics see the recent profusion of critical approaches as a welcome opportunity for the emergence of diverse new techniques. In The Bible after Babel noted biblical scholar John J. Collins considers the effect of the postmodern situation on biblical, primarily Old Testament, criticism over the last three decades. Engaging and even-handed, Collins examines the quest of historical criticism to objectively establish a text's basic meaning. Accepting that the Bible may no longer provide secure "foundations" for faith, Collins still highlights its ethical challenge to be concerned for "the other" -- a challenge central both to Old Testament ethics and to the teaching of Jesus. COLLINS, NINA L.
The Library in Alexandria and the Bible in Greek
Leiden, Brill, 2000. 214 pp. Very good copy. Hardcover with dustjacket. Ancient evidence reveals that the earliest, written translation of the Bible in Greek was completed in Alexandria in 281 BCE, probably by seventy-one scholars, invited especially from Judaea by Ptolemy II. The work was organised by Demetrius of Phalerum, the trusted librarian of Ptolemy II, and the translation was made despite Jewish opposition and the project's high cost. Ptolemy wanted the translation to increase his famous library, to attract scholars to Alexandria and to start his reign with an impressive event. The date of the translation, early in the reign of Ptolemy II, shows that the library was built by Ptolemy Lagus, and that Demetrius of Phalerum was first placed in charge. ISBN: 9789004118669
