¶ The mammals of Africa south of the Sahara comprise the most important and spectacular fauna on earth. This is the first illustrated guide to al of them (save only bats and the smallest, generally nocturnal, species). There is a full description of every species, with measurements and details of form, colour, markings and comparison with similiar species. For each species are also given its various names, notes on its habitat, behaviour and habits - feeding, breeding, calls, social habits, migration, enemies - on variation within the species and the points distinguishing principal groups or subspecies. There is a disctribution map for ecery species in the book (except the Swamp Cat). Every species is accurately and beautifully full illustrated - six in line drawings, all others in colour plates. These have been done scpeially for the book by Pierre Dandelot and use the famous Peterson identification sysments, with bars to indicate important characters and explanatory notes opposite each plate. These descriptions, maps and coloured paintings will together make identification - in the zoo or in the wild - quick and easy.

¶ ZELDZAAM. Alexandrine "Alexine" Pieternella Françoise Tinne (Den Haag, 17 oktober 1835 – nabij Ghat (Libië), 1 augustus 1869) was een Nederlandse expeditiereiziger die in 1862 en 1863 in Centraal-Afrika rondtrok en vervolgens in 1868/69 ver in de Sahara reisde. Op 33-jarige leeftijd werd zij vermoord in de Libische woestijn. Alexandrine Tinne (1835 - 1869) was negen jaar oud toen haar vader overleed. Hij was een succesvolle zakenman die plantages bezat in Guyana. Alexandrine erfde een groot vermogen van 33.000 pond, wat in die tijd enorm veel geld was. Haar moeder, Henriëtte Marie Louise van Capellen, was hofdame bij koningin Sophie, de vrouw van koning Willem III.Alexandrine en haar moeder hadden een grote drang naar vrijheid en avontuur. Samen reisden ze naar Afrika in het midden van de 19e eeuw. Ze waren niet bang om risico's te nemen en trokken naar het gebied van de Nijl. Hun avontuurlijke reizen waren zeer ongewoon voor vrouwen uit die tijd. Ze wilden nieuwe landen en volkeren verkennen en genieten van hun vrijheid. Hun verhalen werden vastgelegd in brieven die ze naar huis stuurden. Deze brieven geven ons een kijkje in de meeslepende en spannende lotgevallen van twee Haagse dames.
