A collection of two scarce editions of 'The Liberal Magazine; a periodical for the use of Liberal Speakers and Canvassers; published under the direction of the Liberal Publication Department&apos. The magazine was chaired by Augustine Birrell (January 1850 – November 1933), an English politician, barrister, academic and author. He was Chief Secretary for Ireland from 1907 to 1916, resigning in the immediate aftermath of the Easter Rising. Containes Volume VII and VIII. To the title pages of each it states 'Forming a Political Record for the Year' 1899 and 1900 respectively. In half calf bindings with cloth boards. Externally, worn with some marks and loss. The top and tail of the spines are rather worn and one of the spine labels to Volume VII is missing while the others have sustained some slight loss. Internally, firmly bound and clean with some age toning throughout. Institutional ink inscriptions have been left to the title page and first page of the index of each. Good . Ill.: None. Good .

Published between 1806 and 1819, The Literary Panorama and National Register merged into the New Monthly Magazine in 1819. It comprised of writings including book reviews, geography pieces on all parts of the world, political writings, historical pieces and all manner of works besides. Edited by Charles Taylor, a man of letters and engraver. Taylor also translated Fenelon's 'Adventures of Telemachus' and produced engravings for 'Picturesque Miscellanies', 'The Landscape Magazine' and 'The Shakespeare Gallery&apos.In three volumes, comprising: volume the second, volume the fifth and volume the sixth of the new series, which ran to nine volumes between 1814 and 1819. Illustrated with a folding facsimile Ancient Greek letter and a frontispiece to volume the second.Scarcely found as a collection. In a contemporary half calf binding. Externally generally smart; leather is rather rubbed to the raised bands and extremities. Front joints have all failed, with the boards held by cords only to all volumes bar volume the fifth, which is loose. Rear joints are also rather worn but remain secure. This volume boasts a variety of articles on contemporary scientific development such as the connexion of electricity with evaporation, terrestrial magnetism, silica and carbon, arseniu Collated, lacking plates II-IV and therefore only containing plate I. The 'Philosophical Magazine and Journal of Science' is one of the oldest scientific journals published in English. This is volume XX of the 'New and United Series of the Philosophical Magazine, Annals of Philosophy and Journal of Science' which covers January-June of 1842. Articles of note to this edition are Professor Grove's 'On a Voltaic Process for Etching Daguerrotype Plates', 'On the Magnetic Influence of the Lunar Spectrum in relation to a New Theory of Terrestrial Magnetism', Mr J Bryce's 'Notice of the Discovery of some remains of the Ichthyosaurus in Ireland', Mr R King on 'The Unexplored Coast of North America' and Professor de Morgan's 'On The Invention of the signs + and - and on the sense in which the former was used by Leonardo da Vinci.' De Morgan is the namesake for the propositional logic and boolean algebraic laws 'De Morgan's Laws. There are several articles by De Morgan in this volume such as 'Additional Note on the History of Fernel's Measure of a Degree'' and 'On Fernel's Measure of a Degree, in reply to Mr Galloway's Remarks&apos. There are numerous articles to this work on barometers, elements, coral reefs, the geological society, meteorological observations and more. A truly fascinating and important work regarding scientific development and discoveries in the mid nineteenth century boasting numerous articles of all areas of science. With a bookplate to the front pastedown of the Dunlop/Dunlap family crest of the double headed-eagle on a shield. In a half calf binding. Externally, worn. Lacking almost the entirety of the backstrip with only the spine label remaining, which is lifting. Patches of rubbing to the extremities and to the boards. Pagination is continuous. Bound in a lovely half morocco binding. Title page for the 1894-5 volume, with half title included. In a half morocco binding over marbled boards and edges, gilt tooling to the spine. Externally very smart with only minor shelf wear, minor rubbing to the spine and boards. The front hinge is only lightly strained, holding firm. The volume firmly bound. Some spotting scattered to the leaves, which are also lightly age toned, as usual due to the type of paper used. Dublin, James Moore, 1793. Leather. A collection of popular eighteenth century periodicals, including the entire run of Steele's The Guardian John Hawkesworth (c. 1715 – November 16, 1773), English writer, was born in London. In company with Samuel Johnson and others he started a periodical called The Adventurer, which ran to 140 numbers, of which 70 were from the pen of Hawkesworth himself. The Guardian was a short-lived newspaper published in London from 12 March to 1 October 1713. It was founded by Sir Richard Steele (bap. 1672 – 1729) who was an Irish writer and politician. It featured contributions from Joseph Addison, Thomas Tickell and Ambrose Philips. Steele and Addison had previously collaborated on the Tatler and The Spectator (not related to the present-day Spectator). This volume contains Numbers I-CXI (Tuesday 7th November 1752 - Saturday 9th March 1754) of The Adventurer and Numbers I-CLXXVI (Thursday 12th March - Tuesday 1st October 1713) of The Guardian. This is therefore the entire run of all issues ever published Bound in calf with gilt detail to the spine. The binding is generally firm but the text block has split in one place exposing the chords. There is some significant wear to the extremities including a significant areas of loss, a split to the spine and absence of the spine label. The inner hinges are strained. Internally the pages are generally bright and clean with the odd spot and some staining. There are ink inscriptions to the front free end paper and the title page.
