Divine Considerations: Treating of those things which are most profitable, most necessary, and most perfect in our Christian Profession

Small 8vo, 149 x 90 mms., pp. [xxii], 437 [438 blank, 439 -454 index and errata], later calf, recently rebacked, with raised bands on spine and red morocco label. the recto of the dedication leaf , "Mr. Geroge Herbert to N. F. the Trnslatour of the Book" has been replaced in ink by a contemporary hand, "mr. Nicolas fferrar of Gidding of Gidding in Huntingdon Glos." He was a great friend of the poet George Herbert: "Nearer the end of Herbert's life, his friend Nicholas Ferrar prepared an English translation, as The Divine Considerations, of a work by the sixteenth-century Castilian humanist, Juan de Valdes, and sent it to Herbert in 1632 for his comments ..." (). Also with recent additions in pencil on the new rear end-papers. The sermons and other works Juan de Valdez were collected and published in 1550 as Le cento e dieci divine considerationi del Señor Giovañi Valdesso. The work was tranalated in 1638 as The Hundred and Ten Considerations of Signior Iohn Valdesso. Otherwise the work was translated into French and English; five editions were published between 1563 and 1546, three in France and two in England. His biographer in the 21st century, Daniel Crews, comments, "Juan de Valdés is a historical enigma. In spite of praise from two popes, two cardinals, Emperor Charles V, and his chief minister, the Papal Inquisition bestowed the honor of naming a heresy after him." Madan.
