Livre de Tertullien, du Manteau. Traduction nouvelle [de François Manessier].
Paris, Pierre Promť, 1665. 12mo. 14 x 9 cm. Bound in green calf with gilt lines, five ribs and gilt title. Flyleaves of gilt decoration paper. Tiny etching on title page. (2), 8, (12), 38, (6) p. (with some mistakes in page numbers). Corners bumped, a bit of wear, but a very good copy. With a printed dedication by Manessier to Jean-Baptiste Colbert, and after the translation a rendering of the original Latin text, a short commentary and the privilege (dated 1650), followed by an errata list. De Pallio ('The Philosopher's Cloak') is a short, ironic work by the Christian philosopher Tertullian, who lived about the year 200 AD. This is a new translation by a French nobleman (three different translations had been published in France in the earlier 17th century), an attractive little book.
