In this case 1830's Rugby, the school of Dr. Thomas Arnold, 'the most influential British schoolmaster of the 19th century'.

Voorschutblad (met uitgeversreclame) aan de binnenkant gebutst. Naam op voortitel ('Zwolle 1879 J. Kalff', mogelijk Mr. Jacob Kalff, raadsheer in de Hoge Raad der Nederlanden), Pseudonieme brieven van een fervent criticus van de jonge koning George III, voor het eerst gepubliceerd omstreeks 1770. Met mooie uitvouwbare facsimiles van vijf handgeschreven brieven en hun lakzegels. De schuilnaam Junius is nooit overtuigend opgelost, dus hier is alsnog uw kans.

On cream colored paper watermarked T.H. Saunders, with printed heading 'Dictionary of National Biography/ (address)'. 18,6 x 11,8 cm. 4 p. Written in thin brown ink on recto only. Signed and dated '17/5/86'. Folded twice. Stained along the fold and vaguely at the foot of the letter. From young Sidney, or rather Solomon Lazarus Lee (1859-1926), the compiler of the Dictionary of National Biography to the cleric and writer Dr. Augustus Jessopp (1823-1914), an authority on 17th century history. A perfectly readable letter on Lee's article about Sir Simonds D'Ewes, that wasn't accepted by James Bass Mullinger. With mention of Leslie Stephen (the father of Virginia Woolf).

About a petition, that Northcote thinks 'very good', but he sees a problem in 'cutting down the School rate quite so low as 6d. in Country Parishes'. Signed 'Yours in haste/ Stafford H. Northcote'. William McCullagh Torrens (1813-1894) was Member of Parliament for Finsbury until 1885.

Very beautiful and fragile picture book of the gifted caricaturist Jan Feith (pseudo: Chris Kras), directed against the English in the Boer War. The rhymes by Van Ponten were written out by the artist. On the front, Paul Kruger carries a spoonful of pills to the British Colonial Secretary, Joseph Chamberlain, while on the lower cover, the man who rides a donkey dressed with a monocle, strongly reminds us of Winston Churchill.
