Kreisel, Hanns
Taxonomisch-Pflanzengeographische Monographie der Gattung Bovista
Lehre, Germany: J. Cramer, 1967. First edition. Pp. viii, 244; 70 full page plates (line-drawings, black-and-white photos, geographic maps with species distributions). Publisher's original gray stiff printed wrappers, lettered in black on the spine and front cover, lg 8vo. Beihefte Nova Hedwigia, heft 25. This monograph deals with the plant geography of the genus Bovista. Bovista is a genus of fungi commonly known as the true puffballs. It was formerly classified within the now-obsolete order Lycoperdales. Following a restructuring of fungal taxonomy brought about by molecular phylogeny, the now-obsolete order Lycoperdales, has been split; the species of Bovista are now placed in the family Agaricaceae of the order Agaricales. Bovista species have a collectively widespread distribution and are found largely in temperate regions of the world. Various species have historically been used in homeopathic preparations. This volume is from the private research collection of University of Michigan mycologist Alexander H. Smith with his signature on the front wrapper. There is another signature on the half title page. There is bump to the top outer corner; a clean copy in very good condition..

Ainsworth (Introduction to the History of Mycology): ""Flora agaricina Danica are both scientifically invaluable and superb examples of modern printing."" This two-volume set is from the private collection of University of Michigan mycologist Alexander H. Smith. No ownership marks and few signs of use. Ectomycorrhizae: Their Ecology and Physiology
New York: Academic Press, 1973. First edition. Pp. xiv, (1), 444; numerous text-figures and black-and-white photos. One-quarter green cloth, lettered in gilt on the spine, over tan cloth lettered in black on the front cover, color pictorial dust jacket, lettered in green on the spine and in white on the front cover, lg 8vo. Ectomycorrhizae (abbreviated EcM) is a form of symbiotic relationship that occurs between a fungal symbiont, or mycobiont, and the roots of various plant species. The mycobiont is often from the phyla Basidiomycota and Ascomycota, and more rarely from the Zygomycota. Ectomycorrhizas form on the roots of around 2% of plant species, usually woody plants, including species from the birch, dipterocarp, myrtle, beech, willow, pine and rose families. Research on ectomycorrhizas is increasingly important in areas such as ecosystem management and restoration, forestry and agriculture (from Wiki). This work surveys all available information on the physiology and ecology of ectomycorrhizae and presents several new concepts concerning the mycorrhizal condition. This volume is from the private research collection of University of Michigan mycologist Alexander H. Smith with his signature on the front endpaper. A near fine copy in a chipped and lightly edge-worn dust jacket..

Mycorrhizas in Ecosystems
Wallingford, Oxon, UK: C A B International, 1992. First edition. Pp. xvi, 419; numerous text-figures (graphs, charts, diagrams). Publisher's original pictorial laminated boards (case-bound), lettered in brown on the spine and front cover, lg 8vo (9.75 x 7 inches). Most of our knowledge of the biology of mycorrhizal symbiosis come from studies in the laboratory or glasshouse. This volume brings together a series of papers which place the major emphasis upon mycorrhizal function in nature. This work presents revised contributions to the Third European Symposium on Mycorrhizas, held at the University of Sheffield on August 19-23, 1991. No ownership marks and no signs of use.
