A short essay reflecting on habit in human beings, exploring the benefits to 'instinctively' carrying out daily tasks, but also the perils of bad habits in modern society. Citing the stresses of meeting modern demands, the author addresses the use of drugs and alcohol to address 'weaknesses' that a person may feel, while also citing Eddyism, the Emmanuel movement, Christian Science, progressive causes and even the suffragist movement as bad habits or supplements that people use to treat themselves in the face of modern inadequacy. FAIR/GOOD condition. Moderate to heavy soiling to the covers, with dark scuffing, uneven fading and some creasing. Dark dampstain to the upper rear cover, affecting the upper margin of the book. Text somewhat browned. Fair .

A later printing of this key work by British philosopher, explaining his theories on the mind-body connection, including his doctrines of vibrations and associations, the formation and growth of consciousness, etc. With a third volume containing notes and commentary on the work by Herman Pistorius. David Hartley, as well as being a British philosopher, was the founder of the Associationist School of Psychology. GOOD condition, ex-library, from a theological institution. Spine labels, bookplates and minor library markings in the interiors of all three books. Front hinge of volume one cracked and split along the entire length, with the front cover tenuously attached. Leather splitting along the other hinges in, but covers more solid. Minor scuffing, uneven darkening and fading to the covers. Extremities scuffed and bumped. Spines very darkened. Minor scattered foxing and spotting in the interior. Notes in ink on a front endpaper of the first volume by previous owner. Good .

Xii, 311 pp. A collection of short philosophical passages musing on life, proper ways of thinking and acting, etc. using historical allegories and other examples. By Henry Homes or Lord Kames, a Scottish philosopher and judge and prominent figure in the Scottish Enlightenment. GOOD condition. Heavy scuffing to the leather along the hinges and extremities, with minor scuffing to the covers. Minor soiling and discoloration to the covers. Owner's signature present. Large armorial bookplate, that of Gordon of Halleaths. Paper browned in the interior, with minor scattered foxing. A few stray pencil lines in the margins. Good .

A work examining various aspects of the Bible, seeking, among other topics, to prove that Greek deities originated from the source of Moses, and that the Old Testament was the source of Greek myths. Huet also sought to debunk Cartesian philosophy, as well as disputing the work of Spinoza in his Tractatus Theologico-Politicus. This work marked his first attack on the philosophy of Descartes. (see Shelford: Transforming the Republic of Letters for previous information). Pierre Daniel Huet was a French scholar, as well as serving as Bishop of Soissons, and was noted for his skepticism, especially his anti-Cartesian views. POOR condition. Both covers DETACHED, with the first endpapers and half-title also detached. Leather also DETACHED from the boards, suffering heavy chipping, fading, loss, and VERY heavy wear. Leather very dry, cracked and brittle on the spine, with some loss. Remains of a sticker on the lower spine. NEEDS REBINDING. Some staining to the rear endpaper, with minor insect damage and a single wormhole affecting the upper portion of the last 20-30 pp, as well as the rear board. The text block is solid, in a much better stated than the exterior, with minor scattered soiling and a small dampstain at the upper margin. Faint browning to the paper, mostly along the extremities. A few pages creased, with one bearing a small tear/piece missing in the fore edge margin, not affecting text. Title partially underlined in pencil. Poor/No Jacket.
