This is the text put together in 1858 following the General Conference of 1857 held in Cincinnati. Dayton Ohio was an early center of United Brethren publishing. The book contains an old signature from 1886 indicating it was used in Ontario MI. .

Ex-convent library with their name stamped on the inside front cover. CINCINNATI ARCHBISHOP JOHN B. PURCELL'S COPY. Contains his signature on the title page plus two-page handwritten note tipped in at the front of the book. The note, which is in Purcell's hand, is titled "Brevior Formula" and is a brief guide to the administration of baptism. Interesting book of Catholic Ritual issued for priests in the United States in 1824. Parsons, Early Catholic Americana, p. 197. John B. Purcell was Archbishop of Cincinnati from 1850-1883. He presided over a period of tremendous growth for the Catholic Church in America because of the swell of European Catholic immigrants to Ohio. Although he brought in many positive institutions to the Cincinnati archdiocese, he ended his final years in disgrace after the collapse of a private bank he had started to provide banking services for immigrants. A rare and interesting piece of Catholic Americana. Good .

Clarkson was one of the chief leaders of the Abolitionist Movement in Great Britain and instrumental in the passage of the Slave Trade Act of 1807. William Cardinal O'Connell (1859-1944) was Archbishop of Boston for 38 years. He was appointed a Cardinal in 1911. He was a powerful figure both in the Church and in Massachusetts politics for decades. Known as "Number One", he was a strong conservative voice in American culture during his lifetime. .

The signature is in pencil. On the front pastedown opposite is a rubber ownership stamp of the Immigrant's Service League in Chicago, an organization Addams helped start. Addams (1860-1935) was the founder of Hull House, the recipient of the 1931 Nobel Peace Prize, co-founder of the ACLU, and a champion for women's rights. She was also an active champion of the rights of immigrants and helped to found the Immigrant's Protective League in 1907 - the organization was re-named the Immigrant's Service League in 1958. This work is a sociological study of immigrant neighborhoods and study on how to best assimilate immigrants into American life. A nice association copy of the important 20th century progressive activist. Very good .

The original brown coated paper endpapers were preserved. Although the repiar is visible, it was expertly done and the two cloths blend together nicely. The interior of the book is clean with only some minor foxing to the first and final few leaves. Two signatures in pencil of former owners, one of whom was E.L. Moseley, a noted Ohio teacher who founded the Science Department at Bowling Green State University. Housed in a custom open-ended slipcase. AN ATTRACTIVE COPY OF THE FIRST AMERICAN EDITION OF A MAJOR BOOK. Darwin's influence on modern thought is of lasting and sigificant importance. .
