Bingii ad Rhenum, G. C. Voigt, 1791. First quarto edition. Editio omnium novissima, notis et animadversionibus, quoad historiam et dissertationem [sic] Novi Testamenti, aucta ad castigationem et illustrationem opinionum quorumdam [sic] auctoris, opera et studio Constantini Roncaglia .. Quibus accedunt, praeter animadversiones a P. Joanne Dominico Mansi .. in 2. Lucensi editione inserta [sic], aliae insuper ejusdem auctoris noviter elucubratae. Full mottle calf, raised bands, gilt decorated compartments, morocco labels, marbled endpapers, all edges red. Sm. 4to.(25 cm). Noel Alexandre, or Alexander Natalis (1639-1724), was a French historian and theologian, of the Order of St. Dominic who studied philosophy and theology in the convent of Saint Jacques, Paris, where he taught for twelve years, obtained the licentiate from the Sorbonne, and in 1675, the doctorate, and was urged to write a complete history of the church, the first volume appearing in 1677. "His directness and conciseness, his critical acumen, and his manner of viewing history and dividing it into special studies (then quite original, although now common enough) won for him the approbation of the learned. The first volumes of the history brought him letters of commendation and praise from Pope Innocent XI and many cardinals, but later volumes gave offense at Rome because of the author's Gallicism, and Innocent XI finally forbade the faithful to read ..it," Cath.Ency. Alexandre corrected the work in the third edition. Constantino Roncaglia brought out a sixth edition, unaltered, but with the addition of paragraphs and dissertations correcting the most offensive statements. The work was thus removed from the Index by Pope Benedict XIII. The edition offered here is the best and most complete, edited by Giovan Domenico Mansi who added many explanatory notes. An anonymous writer in two supplementary volumes (also included here) carried the history into the eighteenth century, and added various dissertations from other historians. The work thus completed appeared at Venice in 1778, in eleven folio volumes, and at Bingen, 1785-91, in twenty volumes. Brunet I, 169. Spines and boards rubbed and scuffed, worn at extremities, heads and heels of a few volumes chipped, calf occasionally darkened or brittle mainly on spines, library call numbers to lower compartments mostly removed, seminary book plate to front pastedowns, occasional bookseller's ticket, bindings tight, some scattered foxing otherwise leaves clean and unmarked. A valuable set.

Fiddes, Richard, The Life of Cardinal Wolsey
Fiddes, Richard
The Life of Cardinal Wolsey
London, Printed for John Barber, 1724. First edition. Cloth. [4], lv, [1], 534, 260 pp. Illus. with seven copper plate engravings and one in-text engraving. Folio. With a list of subscribers. Illustrations include portrait frontispieces of Fiddes, portrait of Wolsey, the Magdalen College Tower; two further portraits: of Bishop Tunstall and Bishop Fox, the House Of Lords; Christ Church College, Oxford (dbl. page); two views of Christ Church interiors; plus in-text engraving of coins. In this work, Fiddes .. "it attempted to vindicate Wolsey's memory from the obloquy which had persistently pursued it, and also that it took a view of the Reformation less unfavourable to the mediaeval church than that of most Protestant writers. Fiddes was immediately attacked both by the press and in the pulpit. He had been faithful to the Earl of Oxford after his fall, and had frequently visited him in prison; further, in the preface to the ' Life of Wolsey,' he said that Atterbury had offered him the opportunity of writing it in his house, and he paid a warm tribute to Atterbury's abilities. It therefore suited Atterbury's assailants to accuse Fiddes of popery, and represent him as employed by Atterbury to write his work," DNB XIX, 398. ESTC T76228. Lowndes 796. A very good or better copy, modern rebinding, leaves very bright, small chip to lower margin of frontis else plates sharp and clean, overall contents near fine.

Foerster, F.W. [Friedrich Wilhelm ], [Als] Brief Note from a German Philosopher & Antifascist Who Fled Germany Before the Rise of the Nazis
Foerster, F.W. [Friedrich Wilhelm ]
[Als] Brief Note from a German Philosopher & Antifascist Who Fled Germany Before the Rise of the Nazis
[Biarritz], 1926. [1 pp.]. 8 x 5 inches. German academic & philosopher, Friedrich Wilhelm Foerster (1869-1966) spent his early career as a lecturer at a variety of institutions, including the University of Zurich, the University of Vienna, and the University of Munich. However at the onset of World War I, Foerster's open opposition to Germany's ruling class and German militariam had resulted in threats on his life and he resigned his teaching post in Germany in 1922 and fled Germany, settling in France. His books were burned in Germn in 1933 and he fled France around 1940, when the Nazis and Gestapo pursued him during their occupation there. He spent the following two decades in New York City, before returning to Switzerland in 1963. Written in English, and dated 28th July, 1926 from Biarritz, Foerster, while "on journey" through France, writes to a friend in Zurich. In full: "I have a very pleasant memory of our talk at the Zurichberg and I am indeed very sorry I cannot see you this time as I am travelling in France. But I am hoping to meet you another time. There are plenty of questions to discuss between us. Near fine, folded.
