Madrid, Imprenta de I. Sancha, 1820. First edition. Marbled paper wrappers with manuscript title. 23 pp. Pages 1-4, and 21-23 are repeated and bound in. 6 1/4 x 4 1/4 inches. Manuel Casal y Aguado, (1751-1837) received a doctor of Medicine from Universidad Valenciana in 1775. He practiced medicine in Madrid, was successful in publishing both original and translated works on medicine, and was dean of the Academia Medica Quirurgica Matritense. Parallel to his professional activity, he maintained constant literary activity throughout his life, using the anagram-pseudonym of Lucas Alemán: he collaborated in the Correo de los Ciegos and Correo de Madrid —and in the various newspapers that appeared— publishing letters, articles and poetry..""mantuvo una festiva polémica literaria en el Diario de Madrid, y publicó en 1813 y 1814 la Pajarera literaria, colección de folletos satirico politicos contra los franceses, que obtuvieron mucha popularidad." (Jerónimo Herrera Navarro: Manuel Casal y Aguado, La Real Academia de la Historia . dbe.rah.es/biografias/72709/). The present work, "El gavilán volando" (The flying hawk) continues that theme. Very uncommon: OCLC and other online databases show four holding locations only: Univ. Toronto, Washington Univ. British Library, and CSIC Spain. Also one at Univ. Conn. Palau 46740. Wrappers detached, duplicate pages bound in, still a clean copy.

Mainly known for his long humorous, epistolary poem, The New Bath Guide, Christopher Anstey (1724-1805) also translated Thomas Gray's Elegy into Latin. A Familiar Epistle is a translation of Anstey's own Latin epistle to its would-be illustrator Coplestone Warre Bampfylde, (Latin original, entitled Epistola poetica familiaris, was originally published at Bath in 1776) picking up the themes of his earlier An Election Ball. Rare in the trade in any condition. ESTC T74912. New paper spine, first half damp stained, some edges lightly creased with minor wear, nice impressions, still a good or better copy .
