LAWRENCE, LOUIS (AUTHOR); KING, DAVID HYATT (INTRODUCTION)
Hirado: Prince of Porcelains (Encyclopedia of Japanese Art Series)
Art Media Resources, Ltd. USA. 1997, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 1878529307). Soft cover. Book, English text; Paperback; 21.4 x 26.9 cm; 0.824 Kg; 175 pages with colour illustrations; Signs of wear on the front cover, spine and back cover. The interior is in very good condition.;"Book on one of Japan's greatest porcelain factories, which enjoyed enduring patronage from the Matsura family, Lords of Hirado Island. We can confidently identify a distinctive Hirado ware from the late 17th century to the 1920's. (.) The aim of this book is to display Hirado ware with its subtlety, charm and magnificence in broadly chronological order; to summarize the documentation, and to underpin these with information about Western collectors, and an Appendix (6) with all known Hirado's artist signatures. In my view the author succeeds in his aims; furthermore the details here can be trusted since the author has used over 20 years enthusiasm and worldwide experience to winnow out the many Hirado imitations.(.) For over 200 years, Hirado was a subsided enterprise where - at the higher levels - excellent artists and craftsmen created fine art for enlightened patrons. Hirado's house style is impressively uniform over generations and especially in the models, filled with surprises and delights. This is a Japanese equivalent to the official Chinese imperial/court porcelains; I hope you come to admire as I do, what the author has given us here." excerpt from the introduction by David Hyatt King. Satsuma: Masterpieces from the World's Important Collections
Dauphin Publishing Limited, London in co-operation with Spink & Son Ltd. 1991, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 1872357040). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English and Japanese text; Hardcover (cloth with dust jacket); 23.5 x 30 cm; 1.510 Kg; 220 pages with colour illustrations. Includes fold outs of some of the pieces.; May show minor signs of long time storage.; Satsuma is probably one of the best know names in the complex field of Japanese ceramics: yet surprisingly little has been published on this subject either in Japan or the West. This innovative book traces the origins of Satsuma pottery from its simple beginnings in the 17th century to the exotically wares of the 19th and 20th century. There are over 200 colour photographs of examples drawn from important private and public collections around the world. This unique combination of descriptive text and superb illustrations guides the Satsuma collector or enthusiast through the maze of pottery shapes, decoration and usage. Included in the book is detailed information on the lives and work of the Satsuma craftsmen, with photographs of their marks to aid the student and connoisseur with identification. SATSUMA is a necessary addiction to the libraries of all those who love and admire Japanese art and culture. The author: Louis Lawrence, born in London in 1949, has been involved with Japanese works of art for more than twenty years. After leaving the university he developed a keen interest in the Orient. This has resulted in a fascination with Japanese art, particularly Meiji art, a period in which the Japanese achieved an artistic pinnacle, and his development as a major dealer, becoming founder director of Tempus Antiques Ltd. The author has traveled extensively both in Japan and the USA for research purposes and has written numerous articles and catalogues, including the catalogue for the Hirado Porcelain Exhibition (London) 1981. Although he has written many articles and papers, this book on Satsuma pottery represents his first major work. New/Dust Jacket Included.

LAZARNICK, GEORGE; FOREWORD BY DAVEY, NEIL K.
The Signature Book of Netsuke, Inro and Ojime Artists in Photographs
Reed Publishers, U.S.A. 1976, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 0917064011). Hardcover. Book, English text.; Hardcover.; 22,5 x 29 cm; 1.9 Kg; 456 pages with black and white illustrations throughout.; Used with signs of wear on the exterior and interior. The books is protected with a clearcover. Very good condition overall.; "George Lazarnick, produced a detailed study on the signatures of netsuke and inro artists, together with easily followed guidelines on how they may be read as well as illustrated notes on the calligraphic construction of the numerous Japanese characters involved. Over a period of several years, in addition to forming a collection of fine netsuke, Mr. Lazarnick has been amassing much detailed information on their carvers, searching out fine examples of their work throughout the world and recording the signatures in a systematic fashion. He has been aided in this work by his own natural gift for photography which, together with a large amount of painstaking research and help from other collectors and Oriental art dealers, has gone towards the production of this book. As George Lazarnick mentions in his introduction, one of the most difficult and brain-taxing aspects of reading and interpreting signatures is that the carved or engraved calligraphy used by the artists does not always follow the strict kanji or printed form of the characters represented. It is in this particular area that Mr. Lazarnick provides us with a wealth of useful information, together with many clear photographs of actual signatures. The majority of these have been enlarged so that the scholar may interpret the quirks and calligraphic mannerisms used by the artists in question with greater ease. As Mr. Lazarnick points out this is not another netsuke and inro book as such. He does not delve deeply into the biographies or artists, the styles of carving that they employed, or the materials that they used. He wisely feels that most of these aspects of the field have been covered and that he would shine a new light, from a different angle on this fascinating subject." excerpt from the foreword by Neil K. Davey, London, 1976. Very Good/No Jacket.

REIKICHI, UEDA; ADAPTED FROM THE JAPANESE BY BUSHELL, RAYMOND
The Netsuke Handbook of Ueda Reikichi
Charles E. Tuttle Company, Inc. of Rutland, Vermont & Tokyo, Japan. 1979, 5th or later Edition. (ISBN: 0804804249). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (cloth with dust jacket in slipcase); 16.4 x 23.8 cm; 1.015 Kg; 325 pages with 226 illustrations, 24 in colour.; Eleventh printing. Used book with minor signs of wear. The dust jacket has a minor tear on the bottom of the dust jacket. The dust jacket is now protected with a clearcover. Interior as new. Signs of wear on the slipcase.; In recent years a number of books have appeared in Western languages on the fascinating miniature sculptures of Japan called netsuke. Oddly enough, all these have been written by Occidentals, most of whom have drawn heavily - with varying degrees of accuracy - upon the research of Japanese experts. High time it is, then, that the leading Japanese authority, Ueda Reikichi, be allowed to speak for himself. Ever since its Japanese publication in 1943, his 'Netsuke no Kenkyu' has been recognized as a definite work in the field. In adapting this valuable study from the Japanese and illustrating it profusely with new photographs, Raymond Bushell has performed a singular service for netsuke aficionados throughout the world. Netsuke have long exerted an irresistible attraction for Occidental collectors. These tiny carvings, principally in ivory and wood, are distinguished by a charm of conception and an attention to detail that frequently make them equal of sculpture on a grander scale. Yet they were originally utilitarian objects designed to serve as pendants or toggles to support tobacco pouches, medicine boxes, and similar items suspended by a cord from the obi. In compiling his handbook, Ueda engaged in exhaustive research that took him not only into the examination of thousands of individual netsuke but also into such areas as the history of the netsuke, the great variety of materials used by the carvers, the regional characteristics of the netsuke, and the biographical facts concerning no fewer than 1,342 netsuke carvers. This biographical information, arranged in concise and really digestible form, constitutes the second part of the volume and, for collectors, the most valuable part, for it includes not only the characters for the real and the art names of the carvers but also a large number of facsmile signatures by which the various carvers may be identified. The 226 photographs, of which 24 are in colour, represent a wide variety of outstanding and representative netsuke and thus form a panorama of netsuke history in which all types appear - from the early and comparatively simple to the late and more intricate. Near Fine/Dust Jacket Included.

NEUER, RONI AND LIBERTSON, HERBERT (TEXT); KICELUK, STEPHANIE (COLLABORATOR); AND YOSHIDA, SUGUSU (INTRODUCTORY AND BIBLIOGRAPHICAL PASSAGES)
Ukiyo-E: 250 Years of Japanese Art
Gallery Books, a division of W.J. Smith, Inc. 112 Madison Avenue, New York. 1988. (ISBN: 0831790415). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (cloth with dust jacket); 25.3 x 31.9 cm; 2.314 Kg; 390 pages with 377 colour illustrations; Used book in very good condition, showing yellowing on the top of the outside text block and also on the rear of the dust jacket (only seen if the dust jacket is removed). The dust jacket shows minor signs of shelf wear. The interior appears unused.; With ukiyo-e, or pictures of the floating world, Japan left a masterly and unique mark on the world of graphic art. These woodcuts bear a singular vivid witness to Japanese everyday life between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries. In this book, lavishly illustrated with 377 colour plates, authors Roni Neuer and Herbert Libertson take us through these centuries, tracing the development of the unparalleled technical and artistic achievement of ukiyo-e. A biographical background by Sugugu Yoshida for the main exponents of the ukiyo-e genre - among them Moronobu, Harunobu, Shunsho and Utamoro - introduces each new section of prints. Color printing was introduced to Japan via China. The ukiyo-e prints were originally black and white until the technique was gradually expanded and perfected to incorporate colours, with the creation of nishiki-e (brocade prints). Woodcut prints were used to illustrate works of literature; then as their popularity increased, their themes and subjects multiplied to include portraits of beautiful women, wrestlers and famous actors of Kabuki theater. Many ukiyo-e prints by Torii Kyonobu I and Torii Kiyomaus I served as theater signposts and playbills. Celebrated courtesans were also immortalized by ukiyo-e artists, and provided Japanese women with an ideal of beauty they could emulate. Erotic ukiyo-e were enormously popular. When their display in shop windows was banned in the early eighteenth century, the artists were forced to make their composition more alluring and elaborate. A strong element of eroticism underlines many of the works, whether directly - as in the portraits of courtesans of the scenes from the famous pleasure quarters of Yoshiwara - or indirectly, in the pictures of ordinary women in everyday situations. Romanticism and sensuality go hand by hand in the ukiyo-e world. Many of the prints evoke a delicate, whimsical world of blossom and poetry, but one where the feminine ideal of beauty is nevertheless enshrined and in its full erotic glory. Arnoldsche Verlagsanstalt, Germany. 2000, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 3925369880). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English and German text; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 22.8 x 30.4 cm; 1.722 Kg; 288 pages with 325 colour illustrations; Minor signs of wear on the cover, spine and back cover.; Dust jacket now protected with a clearcover.; Volume 1.; Netsuke, decorative sash toggles worn by Japanese men, attracted the attention of the Europeans already in the 19th century. Today these delightful art objects are coveted by collectors throughout the world. Netsuke motifs encompass mythical beings, vernacular deities, characters from legends and everyday life, foreigners, animals and plants. Consummate mastery of the carver's craft in a great variety of materials, among them wood, ivory, horn, coral, tortoiseshell and lacquer, distinguishes these miniature works of art. The masterpieces created by famous carvers like Yoshimura Shûzan (1700-1773) and Ohara Mitsuhiro (1810-1878) shaped aesthetic developments in this art medium. In this book, 112 selected objects from the Trumpf collection, one of the major netsuke collections in Europe and exhibited at the Linden-Museum Stuttgart from the 13th of April to the 19th of November 2000, are presented. Decorative Arts of Japan
Kodansha International Ltd, Tokyo. 1964, 1st Edition. Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (with dustjacket); 262 pages with tipped in colour plates: 29 (ceramics), 27 (metal works), 25 (lacquer ware) and 26 textiles; 27 x 35 cm; 3.078 kg; Used book with signs of wear, namely a small stain on the hardcover cloth (only seem if the dust jacket is removed). Minor signs of wear on the interior. The hinge is slightly loose, but the binding remains firm. The dust jacket has tears and minor chips and is now protected with a clearcover.; For us in the West, the category "Fine Arts" refers almost exclusively to painting and sculpture. The rest we relegate to the status of 'minor arts', crafts and curiosities. In China and Japan this has not been the case, and a famous Oriental painter has also been a calligrapher, a potter, a maker of lacquered objects, etc. And well-known Japanese potters occupy an exalted position in the history of Japanese arts as do the most important painters and sculptors. The book presents a full account of these often neglected, but by no means minor, Japanese arts - ceramics, lacquer ware, metal work, textiles. The plates have been selected to give a coherent account of those arts, and to illustrate in full colour the best available examples of all important types or styles in their proper historical context. The full explanations of all the plates have been prepared by outstanding authorities in their respective fields. The general introduction, by Professor Chisaburoh F. Yamada, a recognized scholar of both Western and Far Eastern arts, has been designed to bring Japanese and Western aesthetics principles to bear on the subject, and thus render it meaningful in terms of world art as a whole. Decorative Arts of Japan is a necessary addition to any collection of books on Japanese art. Fair/Dust Jacket Included.
