Richards and his supporters argued that the low density development of the New Towns was inherently flawed when compared to successful densely packed traditional towns - the designers and builders of the New Towns disagreed. Also long study of modern architecture in both pre- and post-war Germany.

Bracken House was the first post-war building in England to be Listed, following proposals for its demolition.
