Isabella Lucy Bird (1831-1904) was an intrepid traveller, adventuress and writer of the late 19th century. This book is about a trip from Srinagar to Ladakh and on via Karakoram in 1889 . Results of a 1979 visit to Tibet by the author and her New York Times veteran far eastern correspondent Seymour Topping on assignment. A fair-minded assessment in its attempt to find a middle way between the propaganda put out by the Chinese authorities and the refugee community. The author's photographs include a rare set of pictures of the controversial series of clay sculptures representing the former feudal oppression of the serfs. Audrey Ronning Topping is a photojournalist specializing in China with five books to her credit. Daughter of a former Canadian ambassador to China and granddaughter of Lutheran missionaries there, she was educated there. Seymour Topping (1921- ) was Managing Editor of the New York Times at the time of writing. Fine.
