"After reading a story in Ladies' Home Journal about the love affair of Abraham Lincoln and Ann Rutledge, Babcock corresponded with the Illinois Historical Society and many persons who had known Lincoln personally. She became one of the country’s leading authorities on Lincoln, having conducted numerous personal interviews with his law partners and others, and published of The Soul of Ann Rutledge in 1919. This biographical novel was an international success, going through fourteen printings and translation into several foreign languages. It also was adapted into a stage play in 1934 and a radio play in 1953, when it was performed by the American Theater Wing. Babcock learned through her research that she shared many of Lincoln’s beliefs, and she wrote four more books about Lincoln and his family between 1923 and 1929. She also wrote Light Horse Harry’s Boys (1931) about Robert E. Lee and The Heart of George Washington (1931) about the first U. S. President." ". Very Good+ in Very Good- dust jacket .

Le Roman D'un Brave Homme (the Story of an Honest Man)
Paris, France: Librarie Hachette Et Cie, 1906. Reprint. Hardcover. B&W Illustrations; This book is entirely in FRENCH. The book is in Very Good+ condition and was likely issued without a dust jacket. The book and its contents are in generally clean, bright condition. The decorated covers have gilt, black and red embossing. The gilding has dulled a bit, especially on the spine. The text pages are clean, but noticeably toned due to the acid content of the paper used." Edmond François Valentin About (14 February 1828 – 16 January 1885) was a French novelist, publicist and journalist.... During the next few years, he wrote novels, stories, a play (which failed) , a book-pamphlet on the Roman question, many pamphlets on other subjects of the day, innumerable newspaper articles, some art criticisms, rejoinders to the attacks of his enemies, and popular manuals of political economy, L'A B C du travailleur (1868) , Le progrès (1864). His more serious novels include Madelon (1863) , L'Infâme (1867) , the three that form the trilogy of the Vieille Roche (1866) , and Le roman d'un brave home (1880) – a kind of counterblast to the view of the French workman presented in Émile Zola's L'Assommoir. He is best remembered as a farceur, for the books Le nez d'un notaire (1862) ; Le roi des montagnes (1856) ; L'homme à l'oreille cassée (1862) ; Trente et quarante (1858) ; Le cas de M. Guérin (1862; see Georges Maurice de Guérin).". Very Good+ .

First Light
London, England: Hamish Hamilton, 1989. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. Hardcover. ISBN: 0241124980. Illustrated by Craig Dodd. Cover Art; The book is in Very Good+ condition with a Near Fine Dust jacket. The book and its contents are in clean, bright condition. The text pages are clean, however, there is some generalized toning to the pages due to the acid content of the paper. The dust jacket is crisp and clean. "In his novels he often contrasts historical settings with present-day segments (e. G. The Great Fire of London, Hawksmoor, The House of Doctor Dee). Many of Ackroyd's novels are set in London and deal with the ever-changing, but at the same time stubbornly consistent nature of the city. Often this theme is explored through the city's artists, especially its writers: Oscar Wilde in The Last Testament of Oscar Wilde (1983) , a fake autobiography of Wilde; Nicholas Hawksmoor, Sir Christopher Wren and Sir John Vanbrugh in Hawksmoor (1985) ; Thomas Chatterton and George Meredith in Chatterton (1987) ; John Dee in The House of Dr Dee (1993) ; Dan Leno, Karl Marx, George Gissing and Thomas De Quincey in Dan Leno and the Limehouse Golem (1994) ; John Milton in Milton in America (1996) ; Charles Lamb in The Lambs of London. The text pages are clean and bright. All edges of the text block have some light foxing. The dust jacket is mostl clean and bright. There are several spots of rubbing to the dust jacket. "Using American Modernist writing of the 1920s as his lofty standard, Aldridge wrote of the creative dilemmas faced by those writers who arrived on the literary scene a generation later, yet still hoped to create fresh depictions of their experience. Reviewing new work as it appeared, he could be merciless in his evisceration of those who, in his view, failed to measure up. As he wrote memorably in 1951, the new writers "have learned that after the innovators come the specialists and after the specialists the imitators and that after a movement has spent itself there can only come the incestuous, the archaeologists, and the ghouls."
