A fisherman in clogs sleeping on a bench on the side of a boat. A second sailing vessel in the background.Woodcut on Japanese paper, sheet size 343 x 293 mm., image size c. 217 x 228 mm. Monogrammed lower right. Made by Dirk Hidde Nijland and published in the Houtsnedenummer (Woodcut issue) of the famous periodical Wendingen in 1919 (year 2, nr. 7/8). It was printed by De Volharding and published by De Hooge Brug.Dirk Hidde Nijland (Dordrecht 1881 - 1955 Bloemendaal) was a Dutch artist who was active from c. 1900 to 1950. He was a painter, graphic artist, ceramist and draughtsperson. In 1950 he contracted an eye disease which forced him to stop painting. In good condition, the left edge folded over. A diagonal crease in the right side of the image. Some more creases in the delicate sheet edges.

An old peasant stands by a wooden barrel with a earthenware jug, emptying a pipe on the barrel. Before 1653. In ornamental frame. Signed on the lower right corner:"PNolpe fecit". 'HET BOERENLEVEN In een bijna ronde schulpvormige cartouche staat een man van voren gezien, met een pelsmuts op, rechts achterwaarts van een ton, waarop hij met de rechtenhand zijn pijpje neerlegt; met de linker brengt hij een grooten kroes naar zijn mond. Op de ton liggen papieren. De cartouche snijdt de voorstelling onderdaan halverwege af. In den rechter benedenhoek der plaat: PNolpe fecit.' Mr. Ch. M.
