A view of the Capitol in Washington, with figures, riders and carriages in the foreground.Steel engraving on laid paper, sheet size 116 x 179 mm., engraved by Ernst Friedrich Grünewald after H. Brown, and published by the Bibliographisches Institut, Hildburghausen, ca. 1840. This print was probably taken from Meyers Konversations-Lexikon. Ernst Friedrich Grünewald (1801-1848) was a German engraver and printmaker.In good condition, some toning and discolouration in the margins, minimal soiling in the image area.

Made by Hendrik Johannes Haverman in 1893.Hendrik Johannes Haverman (Amsterdam 1857 - 1928 The Hague) was a Dutch painter, sculptor and graphic artist, as well as art critic. He was a student in Amsterdam, and later in Antwerp and Brussels. There he was awarded the Leopoldsorde.In gooed condition, some minor imperfections in the sheet edges. The image nice and crisp.

For this impression the title has been left out. It would have read: 'Canal Grando zu Venedig wa die Gondoli al Fresco fahren' [litterally translated:'Canal Grande where the gondolas can travel in a fresher temperature]. Blommers (The Hague), ca. 1850.Carel Christiaan Anthony Last (Amsterdam 1808-1876 The Hague) was a Dutch painter, draughtsperson and lithographer. He studied at the Koninklijke Academie (Royal Academy) in Amsterdam and was taught by Belgian painter Jean-Baptiste Van der Hulst, while he resided in The Hague. While he drew and painted interiors and portraits, he is mainly remembered as one of the first Dutch artists to use the new medium of lithography.In good condition. Lower margin uneven from removal from a book. Some scattered foxing and soiling in the margin edges. A dampstain in the lower right corner, covering a small part of the image area.

This print bears the number 4 in the lower right corner.In fair condition, cropped within platemark, some paper loss in the right edge, a few dark stains in the image area.The collection mark of Pim van Eekelen (Lugt 5105) stamped on the verso.

Steel engraving on porcelain card, a publisher is mentioned but illegible, ca. 1870. It shows sail- and rowing boats as well as a paddle steamer in front of the railway pier. In very good condition.Porcelain card is a card with a coating that resembles porcelain. This was often used for trade cards, but also (as here) for series of mostly commercial prints. Production was ceased in the late 1800's / early 1900's, as the materials contained lead, which was toxic to the tradesmen creating these.

"The Effect of the Light in the Casbah, Agliers". A single figure walks in the shadows of a structure, underneath diagonal wooden beams.Etching with plate tone on laid paper. Sheet size 220 x 153 mm., platemark 151 x 90 mm. Made by Philip Zilcken, and signed by the artist in the lower right margin. Numbered 525 in pencil in the lower left margin (also numbered in the plate). As Zilcken made study trips to Algiers in 1883 and 1908, this print was probably made during one of these trips. Philip Zilcken (The Hague 1857 - 1930 Villefranche-sur-Mer) was an engraver, etcher, biographer, photographer and art critic. He became 'secrétaire intime officieux' to Queen Sophia of the Netherlands at the age of sixteen. He was editor of Elsevier's Geïllustreerd Maandschrift between 1896-1905. Zilcken made numerous reproduction prints after paintings of the Hague School.In very good condition, minimal soiling in the left margin, two small stains (from previous attachment) in the top left and right corners.References: Pit 525. According to Pit, only three copies of this print were made.
