BAEDEKER, Karl [Ludwig Johannes], 1801-1859
South-Western France from the Loire and the Rhone to the Spanish Frontier; Handbook for Travellers
Leipzig, Karl Baedeker, Publisher, 1895. Cloth. Second Edition. xxiv, 294 pages, with 10 maps and 13 plans (some folding). Nominally the second edition, but Baedeker only published this title once. Publisher's red flexible cloth stamped in blind and gilt with all edges marbled and a green silk page-maker. Almost Fine (but for very light soiling to the covers and a touch of foxing to the edges of several maps), with richly marbled edges; the covers bright, square, and tight, the maps properly folded and free of tears. Scarce, especially in such collectible condition. Hinrichsen E123. "The Romantic movement in Germany had given a new impetus to travel . In 1828 Baedeker bought the rights to J. A. Klein's Rheinreise von Mainz bis Köln and, after the death of the author, Baedeker himself revised and updated the work, recreating it for a new market. Using his own travel experiences he guided the tourist to the principal attractions in each place, saving travellers the expense of hiring their own guide. He thus created a new type of guidebook, which was widely copied throughout Europe and opened up tourism to a new class of visitor. The reliability of the information was ensured by annual journeys by Baedeker himself and by reference to respected published sources and expert scholars. For the serious tourist a Baedeker was indispensable, its tone, especially with respect to southern Europeans, assuring northerners of their superiority, and suggesting ways of avoiding dangers. When Lucy Honeychurch finds herself ‘In Santa Croce with no Baedeker' in E. M. Forster's A Room with a View (1908) she is entirely lost." (ODNB) Note: With few exceptions (always noted), we only stock Baedekers in exceptional condition, carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene wrappers. Fine- .

BALDWIN, James (1924-1987); Yoran Cazac (Illustrates), [Juvenile] Little Man, Little Man : A Story of Childhood
BALDWIN, James (1924-1987); Yoran Cazac (Illustrates)
[Juvenile] Little Man, Little Man : A Story of Childhood
New York, Dial Press, 1976. First Edition. Hardcover. First Printing of this "child's story for adults," written in Black English from the perspective of Baldwin's seven-year-old nephew. Illustrated by Yoran Cazac. Royal 8vo (242 x 185mm): 96pp, with color illustrations throughout. Publisher's pictorial boards (repeating dust jacket design), illustrated dust jacket priced $6.95. An exceptional example (spine ends lightly bumped), tightly bound and clean throughout. Since the Sixties, Baldwin had faced rejection by Black militants, who opposed his integrationist views, while, at the same time, the mainstream media panned his later works. Feeling ostracized and depressed, he turned inward, drawing comfort from his large family, particularly his brother, David. One fruit of this isolation and introspection was this children's book. N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable mylar sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed. BATES, H. E. (Herbert Ernest, 1905-1974); Carol Barker {illustrates]
Achilles the Donkey; [Together with] Achilles and Diana; [and with] Achilles and the Twins [All Signed]
London, Dennis Dobson [through 1964], 1962. First Edition. Hardcover. Illustrated in color throughout by Carol Barker. First Impressions of the second and third works, Second Impression of Achilles the Donkey (first published 1962), all three volumes signed by Bates on half-title or title pages; two dated 1969. Royal 8vo (285 x 216mm): unpaginated, with full-color illustrations on almost every page. Publisher's pictorial boards, titles to spines in black, illustrated end papers and title pages; wraparound illustrated dust jackets identical to covers, all priced 18s. Exceptionally fresh copies, a virtually pristine, superlative set. Eads A 93a, 96a, and 101a. Unusually, the artwork for the installment in this trilogy of children's picture books came first. Barker painted the pictures after a visit to Greece, and Bates agreed to write the text to accompany them. For the second and third books in the series, the collaboration was more orthodox, with Bates writing the story, which Barker then illustrated. A simple tale of a young donkey, named for his running abilities, who is separated from his mother and bought by a cruel fruit-vendor. He escapes ill-treatment with the help of a pelican named Popo. The story was adapted for the television series "Jackanory" and aired in September 1970. N. B. Scloppetaria: Or Considerations of the Nature and Use of Rifled Barrel Guns, with Reference to Their Forming the Basis of a Permanent System of National Defence, Agreeable to the Genius of the Country
London, Printed by C. Roworth, Bell-yard, Temple-Bar, for T. Egerton, Military Library, Near Whitehall, 1812. Morocco. Second Edition of the first book in English on target rifle shooting (the Latinized title means The Militiaman) and attempts to increase the accuracy of long-barreled firearms. Tall 8vo: xxiv,251,[7]pp, including errata sheet, with nine numbered engraved plates, three target plates showing the accuracy of various rifle bores, and two tables; fourth folding target illustration, in manuscript, bound in. Recently quarter-bound in blue straight-grained morocco and marbled paper, spine in six compartments, title stamped gilt to second, edges untrimmed. Finely preserved example, all but pristine. Quite scarce; World Cat lists only two copies, both in the British Library. Riling 350. Originally published in 1808, with chapters on projectiles, the theory of spiral motion, qualities of the rifle, history of the rifle, construction and perfection of the rifle, appendages (gun powder, balls, patch and stopple, target), and mode of use (loading, taking aim, cleaning). "The English military conducted research on various rifles from 1800, especially emphasizing long-range shooting at targets at more than 550 metres. When early in the 1850s volunteer rifle brigades for [target rifle] shooting were formed, they attracted some of the finest shots in the United Kingdom, and long-range shooting became so popular that at the first prize meeting in 1860 of the National Rifle Association, Queen Victoria fired the first shot." [MAURICHEAU-BEAUPRÉ, Charles; CUNARD, Nancy (translates?)], [Guide Book] [Louis XIV] a Day in Versailles. Illustrated Guidebook of the Museum, the Park, the Chateau, the Trianons
[MAURICHEAU-BEAUPRÉ, Charles; CUNARD, Nancy (translates?)]
[Guide Book] [Louis XIV] a Day in Versailles. Illustrated Guidebook of the Museum, the Park, the Chateau, the Trianons
Paris, Braun & Co, 1950. First Impression. Stiff Wrappers. First English language edition of this Cunard curiosity, as she purportedly translated this guide book. Foolscap 8vo: 64pp, with 32 full-page illustrations from photographs and 8 plans. Original greyish-beige perfect-bound wrappers printed in green and reddish-brown. A Very Fine copy, virtually pristine. There is no credit to Cunard within the book's pages, and the Bibliotheque National de France attributes the translation to "Miss Erlich," without a clue to her identity or providing a basis for the attribution. Evidence for Nancy Cunard's responsibility for the translation comes from a copy owned by a London bookseller that once belonged to Cunard and was inscribed by her on the title page ("Translation from the French Edition by Nancy Cunard Feb 1950)." Cunard (1896-1965), of course, was the British upper class poet, heiress, and political activist, who became muse to some of the twentieth century's most distinguished writers and artists, including Wyndham Lewis, Aldous Huxley, Tristan Tzara, Ezra Pound and Louis Aragon—who were among her lovers—as well as Ernest Hemingway, James Joyce, Constantin Brâncu i, Langston Hughes, Man Ray, and William Carlos Williams. In 1920, Cunard moved to Paris, and seven years later to a farmhouse in La Chapelle-Réanville, Normandy, where she set up the Hours Press. After the Second World War, she returned to England, and in later years she suffered from mental illness and poor physical health, worsened by alcoholism and poverty. N. B. [BECKFORD, Peter, 1740-1811]
[Rural Sports] [Fox-Hunting] Thoughts on Hunting. In a Series of Familiar Letters to a Friend
Sarum [Salisbury], printed by E. Easton: sold by P. Elmsley, in the Strand; J. Ridley, St. James Street; London; and W. Sollers, Blandford, 1781. Full Calf. First Edition, complete with half-title, of this "corner-stone of a huntsman's library." (Gee) Small 4to: [10],334pp (pp. 303-310 misnumbered 301-308), with engraved frontispiece of Diana preparing for the hunt by Bartolozzi after Cipriani and two engraved plates (plan and elevation of stables). Contemporary tree calf, spine in six compartments between raised bands, elaborately tooled in gilt, red morocco lettering piece gilt, marbled edges and end papers, three green silk ribbon markers. Fine, wide-margined copy on heavy paper, virtually pristine. Lowndes I, 136. Rothschild 350 (second edition, 1782). Schwerdt I, 56 ("A famous book on this subject"). Gee, p. 8. Sterling Library 35. Beckford was the first English writer to describe minutely and accurately the whole sport of hunting. "Beckford's works were remarkable because they detailed the grubby nitty-gritty of animal husbandry in a light, eloquent prose. [He] offered detailed advice on all aspects of animal welfare, specializing at various periods in the breeding of harriers, foxhounds, and buck-hounds. Almost a hundred years later his tips on various practical topics were quoted in D. P. Blaine's authoritative An Encyclopædia of Rural Sports. (ODNB) "'Never,'" wrote a writer in the Retrospective Review, "had fox or hare the honour of being chased to death by so accomplished a hunter; never was huntsman's dinner graced by such urbanity and wit. He would bag a fox in Greek, find a hare in Latin, inspect his kennels in Italian, and direct the economy of his stables in exquisite French'". (DNB). N. B. [Eric Arthur Blair, writing as:] ORWELL, George (1903-1950), [Cartoon Strip] Animal Farm
[Eric Arthur Blair, writing as:] ORWELL, George (1903-1950)
[Cartoon Strip] Animal Farm
1954. First Edition thus. Stiff Wrappers. Uncommon edition of the world's most famous modern animal fable and political allegory. Oblong 8vo (164 x 240mm): [28]pp, with 52 cartoon strips. Grey illustrated wrappers printed in black, staple-bound. Light stain to top left corner of upper wrapper, else an excellent example, tightly bound and clean throughout. Fenwick (A.10.M1) mentions, in passing, the strip cartoon version serialized by British and American newspapers but not this publication. Shortly after Orwell's death, his widow Sonia was visited in London by representatives of the American producer Louis de Rochemont, seeking movie rights to Orwell's novel. A conventional live-action adaptation was out of the question, of course, given that the book's main characters were farmyard animals, so De Rochemont hired the British husband-and-wife animators John Halas and Joy Batchelor, who had produced propaganda films during the Second World War. Their adaptation of Animal Farm was released in 1954, the first feature-length animation movie made in the United Kingdom. Unbeknownst to Halas and Batchelor, de Rochemont secretly worked for the CIA. According to Hugh Wilford (see The Mighty Wurlitzer: How the CIA Played America), the CIA provided most of the $500,000 funding for the film. For Orwell, the Communists ended up no less rotten than the capitalists they'd rebelled against. For the CIA, however, such a view reflected as badly on Washington as it did on Moscow, so de Rochemont's finale, in which humans are entirely absent, has the pigs get their comeuppance from the animals they betrayed. Harold Whitaker, one of the film's lead animators, produced the comic-strip version, which appeared in newspapers to promote release of the film, in 1954. N. B. Te Amsterdam, By M. Magérus, Boekverkooper, 1772. Stiff Wrappers. First and only edition of Boddaert's description of the nocturnal giant leaf frog (a native of the Amazonian rain forest that produces a poison traditionally used as medicine) from the Schlosser natural history cabinet, the first monograph on (and first illustrations of) this species. Demy 4to (283 x 221mm): 48pp, printed on heavy paper in Dutch and Latin on facing pages, with three folding engraved plates. Bound in recent stiff marbled wrappers, printed paper label to front cover, edges speckled green. An excellent example, virtually pristine. Nissen ZBI 435. Schlosser, and three others (numbered) by Boddaert: De Chaetodonte argo (1770); de Testudine cartilaginea (1770), and De chaetodonte dicantho (1772). Johann Albert Schlosser (d. 1769) was an Amsterdam physician, member of the Royal Society in London, and collector who assembled a fine natural history cabinet. After his death, Boddaert published four reports (including this and one on the freshwater Southeast Asian soft-shell turtle, which we also have on offer) on zoological specimens from Schlosser's collection, while also preparing Schlosser's cabinet for auction. Te Amsterdam, by Kornelis van Tongerlo, 1770. Stiff Wrappers. Bound in recent stiff marbled wrappers, printed paper label to front cover, edges speckled green. An excellent example, virtually pristine. Nissen ZBI 434. Third in a series of five letters describing exotic animals, often bound together (De lacerta amboinensi, by Johann Albert Schlosser, and three others (numbered) by Boddaert: De Chaetodonte argo (1770); De rana bicolore (1771), and De chaetodonte dicantho (1772), published in Amsterdam. Schlosser (d. 1769) was an Amsterdam physician, member of the Royal Society in London, and collector who assembled a fine natural history cabinet. After his death, Boddaert published four reports (including this and one on the nocturnal giant leaf frog, which we also have on offer) on zoological specimens from Schlosser's collection, while also preparing Schlosser's cabinet for auction. As was customary, each publications was addressed to a colleague, in this case to W. Roëll, professor of medicine at Utrecht. N. B.
