¶ His first travel book, a homage to a part of the world that captivated him more than any other. ‘Weaving the myths of the Sirens into the landscape and history of the region’, Douglas writes with knowledge and an irrepressible exuberance of the past and the present, of legends and archaeology, folklore and daily life, patron saints, local ghosts, wine, and the wind.’ Scarce as nearly 900 of the 1500 copies printed were pulped(!), and 200 were used for the US edition.

Forbes spent four months the following year conducting experiments on the Swiss glaciers to be followed by further visits in subsequent years and in 1851 a tour of the glaciers of Norway. The result was a stream of some forty publications on the subject over the next twenty years. The chief of these were Travels through the Alps of Savoy (1843), [the above], and a collection of his most important glacier papers, Occasional Papers on the Theory of Glaciers (1859) ...’ Neate F44. ‘Although Forbes visited Norway primarily in the course of his scientific researches into glaciers his book was regarded as a great classic by Cecil Slingsby, the ‘Father’ of Norwegian mountaineering.’
