Book very slightly cocked, leather rubbed, spine head chipped, rear endpapers a little damp marked. Else internally a good tight and clean copy. By Sir Charles Norton Edgcumbe Eliot (diplomat and scholar), better known for his works on Buddhism and Hinduism, and 'Turkey-in-Europe'. This was the First Finnish grammar to be published for English speakers and is prefaced by a lengthy discourse on the Finno-Ugric languages including Lappish, Samoyed, Cheremiss and others. Also theorising on the possible links with Turkish, Manchu and possibly Japanese.
