Later fine binding, raised bands decorated in gilt to spine, blind stamped compartments, morocco label lettered gilt, boards ornately blind stamped, gilt dentelles, marbled endpapers and fore-edges. viii+412pp. two engraved battle plans as called for, folding frontis. Map not present (appears not to have been issued thus), silk marker. Small chip to spine head, edges a little rubbed, one map a little protruding. However very tight, clean, very minor damp spotting. A very nice copy. Hardback.

Distinguished in the field of natural history and what was known as 'physical theology. His works include "De sapientia, omnipotentia et providentia ex partibus insectoruen cognoscenda..", Nordh. 1735, and on the theology of stones" Lithotheologia", Hamb. 1735. With Ex libris bookplate of G. Mori, illustrated and dated by K Völlmy[19]04.

Hamburg, Halae-Saxonum (Halle), Nikolaus Wegner Wegener, Ch. Bismarcus, 1570, 1615. Small 8vo. 10 x 15 cm. Original vellum over paste-boards, slips laced through binding at hinges, blind tooled ruled spine and panel to boards. Title in contemporary ink to spine, later "1570" to spine, initials "T.R.S". and "1624" to upper board. Wick Episcopi Library label to paste-down. C.18th. ink annotations to fep verso in Latin. Woodcut device to title-page, Harburg coat-of-arms to C1 verso, Nikolaus Wegener's woodcut device to errata verso. M Zuber's work lacks title and dedication, presumed Ch Bismarcus, Halle, 1615. A1-Z1, Aa1-Gg7, errata, printer's device, Finis, iv blanks, A3 - O(7). Original vellum very good but darkened and dusty from age as are fore-edges. Early repair with title page neatly laid down, some small loss of text. No loss but 2 gatherings loose, one protruding, pp. L2 and L8 loose but present. Occasional contemporary or early pencil and ink annotation and underscoring. Lacks title page to Zuber's Gnomotypia. Thomas Mauer: (Triebel 1536 - Lüneburg 1575) German Protestant theologian and acclaimed poet. Learned in Latin, Greek and Hebrew, was known for his Latin verse. His father-in-law was musicologist Lucas Lossius. 'Silesius' is an acknowledgement of Silesia as an idealised homeland. The printer Nicolaus Wegener (?- 1608) also worked at Schleswig. Matthaeus Zuber (1570-1623) also acclaimed scholar of Latin and Greek, who published verse in Latin.

Text in Latin and in Greek. Elzevier's eagle device (Concordia res parvae crescent) to title page. Pp. 15 and 157 with usual misnumbering. A very nice copy. Internally crisp and clean. Spine ends a little chipped, joint just a little tender. Ex National Central Library given by W L Simpson, R. Abercrombie's early (C.18th? ink signature to f.e.p).

London, Printed for Charles Adams and are to be sold at his shop, 1662. 12mo. (121 x 67 mm), [58]+227 pp. Sympathetically re-backed in gilt-ruled calf, cloth boards and new end-papers. Title within double-ruled border, lacks initial blank and A, leaves A3–5 mis-signed A2–4 (title-page should be A2): A 10(-A) a12 b6 B-K12 L6. Minor loss to t.p. leading corners, else tight and clean. Attributed to Paul Pellisson-Fontanier (1624–1693) born in Béziers, of a distinguished Calvinist family. He studied law at Toulouse and become secretary to Nicolas Fouquet. Later in life he became official historian to the king, and in that capacity wrote a fragmentary Histoire de Louis XIV. The present work is sometimes attributed to his brother Georges.

Berlin, Duncker und Humblot, 1845, 1872. Original half leather over marbled boards, viii+332 pp. with appendices (Beilagen), coloured map and a 389 pp manuscript translation (1872) bound in. The original German first edition rebound into a folder with a contemporary manuscript translation into English bound in. Foreign Office stamp to spine and withdrawn stamp inside. The translation appears to be of about 3/4 of the text. Upper board detached (but present), backstrip mainly holding but age damaged, original leaves including appendices and map present. "The Sound Dues (Sundzoll) was a toll on the use of the Øresund which constituted up to two thirds of Denmark's state income in the 16th and 17th centuries. The dues were introduced by King Eric of Pomerania in 1429 and remained in effect until the Copenhagen Convention of 1857". (Wiki). Regarding F.O. translations, around 1871 the more stringent examinations than previously had been introduced and candidates were expected to be able to translate from Latin, French and German.
