. Pp. xlviii, 332, (4); 300. Text within woodcut border. With one folding engraved map, four folding engraved plates and two large folding engraved tables. Contemporary full calf, spines with five raised bands, decorated in gilt and with title labes, rubbed, spine ends chipped, marbled endpapers. Rare first edition. Jean-Baptiste-Claude Delisle de Sale (1741-1816) was a controversial French philosopher renowned for his "De la philosophie de la nature" (1770-1804). He was even imprisoned for his radical ideas and interpertations of Enlightenment writings. A beautiful copy with attractive engravings of Babylon and the Kaaba in Mecca. A second edition was published in 1782 with a slightly different title ("Histoire de l'empire Assyrien"). Barbier i, 655.

Contemporary half calf on marbled boards, flat spines with title labels, worn and hinges weak. Internally clean and crisp. Second edition (first 1669) of this important oriental lexicon and first separate edition, edited by Johann David Michaelis. Edmund Castell (1606-86) was professor of Arabic at Cambridge and assisted Dr. Brian Walton in the preparation of his Polyglot Bible (1657). Castell's Lexicon took 18 years to complete and was specially prepared to supplement the Polyglot. . Pp. (ii), x, 372. With frontispiece and thirteen wood engraved plates protected by tissue guards. Publisher's decorated brown cloth printed in gold and black, with some very light wear. Old ownership signature on front paste down. A few pages and the plates with some foxing. First edition, extremely rare. This work dealing with the role of women in society and female education in Lebanon and Syria is one of the earliest of its kind. Henry Harris Jessup (1832-1910) was an American missionary who came to Syria (now Lebanon) in 1855 where he stayed and worked until his death. He served as acting pastor of the Syrian Church of Beirut for more than thirty years. He functioned as secretary of the Asfuriyeh Hospital for the Insane from its establishment and also becoming missionary editor of the Arabic Journal, El Nesrah. Jessup writes about the situation for women in the Mohammedan world in general but he also describes the Druze religion and Druze women; the extreme Shi'ite group Nusayriyyah; different missionary schools for girls in Syria (and Lebanon); Beduin Arabs; the cities of Homs and Aleppo; and at last a chapter written for children. First edition of this beautifully illustrated work of travels to Lebanon, Palestine and Syria by Dr. Lortet, a member of the Faculty of Medicine at Lyon. In 1875 he was sent on a mission to collect botanical and zoological material for the Musťum d'histoire naturelle (in Lyon). Several of the illustrations are engraved from original photographs taken by the French firm Maison Bonfils in Beirut. A lovely copy. RŲhricht 3377.

Codex Nasaraeus, also called Ginza Rba and sometimes The Book of Adam, is the canonical prayer book of the Mandaeans. It is a compilation of various oral teachings and written texts and includes literature on a wide variety of topics: liturgy and hymns, theological texts, as well as both religious and secular poetry. It was originally written in Mandaic script which is a local variant of the Aramaic language. Norberg published the Codex in Syriac characters together with a Latin translation.
