An Account of Cochin-China. Two parts in one volume. [London 1744].
. Folio. Pp. 699-743, (1). Old half cloth on marbled paper boards, spine faded. This is an anonymous abridged English translation of B—rri's popular account of Cochin-China, an extract from Churchill's "Collection of Voyages and Travels" (first 1704). Originally published in Italian at Rome in 1631. The account comprises two parts; the first covering the current state of the kingdom including information about the name, climate, natural history, animals, customs and manners, government, wars, and trade and ports. The second part is devoted to the spiritual state dealing with the conversion of Cochin-China's elites, missionary activities and the "spiritual" needs of the people. Cristoforo B—rri, an Italian scientist, spent four years with the Jesuit mission in Cochin-China between 1616 and 1621. Cf Cordier BI 1918-19.

. Pp. (iv), ii, 325; (iv), 342. Includes the two half titles but maybe one leaf (blank or errata?) missing at end. Later full calf, flat spine decorated in gilt and with red title label. Marbled edges and end papers. Second edition of a missionary work which to a large extent based on Antoine du Montyon's work published in 1811 under the title "Exposé statistique du Tunkin, de la Cochinchine, ... sur la relation de M. La Bissachère". La Bissachère (1764-1830) was a French missionary who arrived in Tonkin in 1790 where he remained for 17 years. He was very successful in his missionary work and converted many inhabitants. He travelled extensively in the area. This work contains accurate and interesting information about the countries dealing with geography, geology, zoology, commerce, navigation, commerce, politics, military forces, religion, customs and manners, etc. Cordier BI 998.

This narrative is mainly based on De Montyon's work, which was originally published under a different title in 1811. . Oblong folio. Size: 38.5 x 28.5 cm. Pp. (xii) comprising dedication, title, preface, table of contents followed by extra title with portrait of the emperor Duy-Tán. With 75 heliogravure plates, several with multiple images. Each plate interleaved with a leaf of descriptive tissue. Parallel text in French, English and German. Publisher's calf binding, with faux (or genuine?) snakeskin on covers , lettered in gilt, silk endpapers. The plates themselves are subtitled in the three languages and in Chinese. A wonderful copy of this interesting album devoted to Annam and Tonkin) (Vietnam). The plates with numerous photographs depict views, people, ceremonies, pagodas, and official buildings. The illustrations from Hué include several of the tombs of kings, and others of pagodas, musicians, palace eunuchs, etc. Many photos are taken in Hanoi and show residential quarters, both of natives and foreigners, different types of Delta women, Mandarin families, river sampans as well as several important sites. From the region around Hanoi there are photos from Ha Long Bay, Haiphong, Nam Dinh, Bâc Ninh Province and Tuyên Quang. At the end about fifteen plates are devoted to Cao Bàng province, the mountainous region in the north-eastern part of the country and home to many ethnic hill tribes. Includes many images of these hill tribes. Pierre Dieulefils was a French photographer who ran a studio in Hanoi 1885-1925.

Jean Dupuis (1828-1912) was a French merchant who was very active seeking a trading route between Yunnan and the delta of Tonkin via the Red River. His account explains the difficulties with customs and the controversies and fights with the Black Flag Army who helped the Vietnamese government to defeat the French. In 1881 Dupuis was awarded the Delalande Guérineau prize by the Academy of Sciences in Paris. ("Mémoires de la Société Académique Indo-Chinoise de Paris. Tome deuxième"). Cordier BI 2518-9.
