CARTWRIGHT, CHARLES:
An Abstract of the Orders and Regulations of the Honourable Court of Directors of the East-India Company, and of other documents relating to the Pains and Penalties the Commanders and Officers of Ships in the Company's service are liable to, for breach of orders, illicit trade, &c. + An Appendix, ... and a list of the duties payable to the King on all goods imported from the East-Indies and China. No place (London 1788).
. Pp. (viii), lxxx, appendix 56. Occasional minor spotting, one small marginal wormhole repaired. Modern green morocco, ruled in gilt, spine lettered in gilt. First edition.A manual for East India Company officers, mainly focused on their private trade compiled by Cartwright, the Deputy Accountant-General. The extent of the Abstract suggests a remarkable range of illicit commerce. The attached list of duties to be paid on imported goods from the East Indies and China includes arrack, coffee, elephants' teeth, various fabrics, dragon's blood, tea, rum, etc. Officers are reminded not to land goods on Sark, Jersey, or Ireland. An order prohibiting dockers from entering ships' holds suggests a recognised route for smuggled cargo. The numerous notes regulating bullion and bills of exchange indicate yet another area of illegitimate activity. Commanders are reminded that passengers, unless authorised by appropriate Company officials, or members of the ships' company, are prohibited, with details of charges depending on nationality. Scarce.

. 4to. Pp. (iv), xxxii, 268, Sanskrit text pp. (iv) + 166, Notes pp. 122, Appendice pp. 100. With one folding lithographed plate in sepia. Chézy's magnus opus and editio princeps of Shakuntala (in the Bengali recension) with a French translation together with the correspondence episode from the Mahabharata in the appendix. The Hindu story of Shakuntala is told in the epic Mahabharata, considered the best of Kalidasa's works. Kalidasa was a Sanskrit poet and dramatist widely regarded as the greatest Indian writer of any epoch. Much of his life is unknown but it's believed he lived in the 5th century. Antoine-Le—nard de Chézy (1773-1832) was a French orientalist, pupil of Silvestre de Sacy, who became a pioneer of Sanskrit in Europe. He was an Arabic and Persian scholar who taught himself Sanskrit from the manuscripts at the Bibliothèque Nationale. He was appointed the first professor of Sanskrit at the Collège de France (first of its kind in Europe). Today he is almost forgotten and overshadowed by his talented students Eugène Burnouf, Franz Bopp and Othmar Frank to mention a few. Ref: G. Pollet: "Indian Epic Values: Ramayana and its Impact" Leuven 1995. Pp. 117.
