Contemporary half calf on marbled boards, flat spines with title labels, worn and hinges weak. Internally clean and crisp. Second edition (first 1669) of this important oriental lexicon and first separate edition, edited by Johann David Michaelis. Edmund Castell (1606-86) was professor of Arabic at Cambridge and assisted Dr. Brian Walton in the preparation of his Polyglot Bible (1657). Castell's Lexicon took 18 years to complete and was specially prepared to supplement the Polyglot. Some staining, a few plates are soiled and some with tear at margin. Half calf, spines with four raised gilt bands and lettered in gilt. A Swedish version of "Voyage de la Propontide et du Pont Euxin" (Paris 1800), translated by Bergstedt and with his comments and addendum. Includes additional descriptions of Smyrna, the Troad, the islands of Zea, Tenedos, Myteline, Chios, Samos, Rhodes, etc, and the ruins of Miletus and Ephesus. Includes Dallaway's descriptions of the Bosporus and Constantinople and a translation of Orpheus' poem about "the Argonautic train". References from works by Peyssonnel, D'Ohsson and William Eton have been used. The translator, Bergstedt, was a Swedish diplomat who travelled extensively to Egypt, Constantinople and Greece between 1794 and 1797. The first part contains mainly his own travel account. . Pp. 231. Contemporary limp vellum. Small wormhole running through margin of first two leaves. This Hebrew grammar was first published in 1529 and reissued many times. Scarce, interesting edition with comments by Quinquarboreus (or Cinquarbres), notes by Isaac and Gilbert Gťnťbrard and amendments by J. Mercerio (Jan Mercer). Clenardus was a Flemish Christian humanist, grammarian, orientalist and professor of Latin at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. Clenardus' success was largely due to his methodical presentation of the contents and clear formulations of the grammatical rules. First French edition of Conde's history of the Arab rule in Spain. Josť Antonio Conde (1766-1820) was educated at the university of Alcal‚ and became a member of the Spanish Academy in 1802. This his most important work presents for the first time a complete version of the history of Islamic Spain covering the period from the Arab invasion of Spain in 711 to the expulsion of the latter in 1492. With some annotations in pencil by Allan Uggla. First edition. O'Connor spent thirty years in the service under the Government of India. After a few years in India he served in Tibet (was the first military attachť to Lhasa), and later on in Persia and Nepal. Enclosed to this work: 1. Letter to Allan Uggla from Sven Hedin dated 1922; 2. Letter from Ida to Allan Uggla dated Karakorum 1914; 3. The newspaper "Fars" in Persian dated 1914 with a poem by al-Molk (about the Swedes and Allan Uggla); 4. Postcard adressed to A. Uggla in Shiraz; 5. Letter in French to Ida Uggla (appeal for help of a person being in prison); 6. Thank you letter from Alf Ňberg to Claes Uggla. Captain Allan Uggla was in charge of the Swedish gendarmerie in Persia. According to O'Connor: "Captain Uggla, who took over the command during the summer in 1913 made an admirable Commandant - tactful, suave, a good linguist, and a good organiser. He was the man for this difficult post." (pp. 200-01).

With two engraved frontispieces, one engraved plate and four woodcut plates in the text (vol. iv). Numerous engraved initials and head-and-tail pieces. Partly some browning due to paper quality. Title pages and plates are narrowly cut. Title to second part of volume one with some minor loss at outer margin. Contemporary full mottled calf, spines with five raised bands richly decorated in gilt, title labels, rubbed and hinges cracked, spine ends worn. Volume one in a late issue of the first edition or maybe the second edition (?), the other volumes in first edition.French edition of one of the most famous and influential early European travel account to the Middle East, first published in Italian in 1650-63. In 1614 della Valle set out for a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. On his long journey he visited Turkey, Egypt, the Holy Land, Syria, Persia and India before he returned home to Rome in 1626. His account is based on letters sent to his friend the Neapolitan physician Mario Schipano. Volume one contains letters from Constantinople where he spent 18 months, the second and third are devoted to Persia where he stayed for four years, and the fourth to India and his return journey via Basra, Aleppo, Cyprus, Sicily, Corsica and Malta. Della Valle spoke proficient Arabic, Persian and Turkish which ennabled him to understand more of the foreign cultures he visited than many of the other Western travellers at this time.
