A German translation of "Narrative of a pedestrian journey through Russia and Siberian Tartary..." (London 1824). Captain John Dundas Cochrane was a nephew of the famous Lord Cochrane, and after the peace, being turned down for further naval service, set out on foot to tour the world. The Russian Government gave him travelling facilities and he travelled, mainly by foot, across Siberia to Kamsckatka. This account contains observations from the expeditions of Otto von Kotebue, Vasilieff and Baron Ferdinand Vrangel. Includes descriptions of the native people, their social and economic conditions. . Oblong 8vo. Pp. xiv, 66, 65-88, 87-185 + one leaf with the "Pa Kua", 61 coloured lithograph plates of peddlers, 16 tipped-in halftone photographs, one paper pattern and one diagram. As issued in original boards covered with beautiful multicoloured silk, printed title label on upper cover. Housed in the original decorated paper case, worn.First edition of this charming and informative work on street vendors in Peking. It describes 54 different kinds of peddlers including their characteristic sound or call, and what they have to sell, buy, or trade. Each is accompanied by an illustration of the vendor himself and his commodity. A few examples: the melon seed trader, "feet fixer", "moon cake" vendor, travelling magicians, "bundle cake" peddler, "used silver" buyer, and different kinds of fortune tellers. Constant's original work was presented as part of his Maste's degree at the California College in China (April 1936). A beautiful copy well-protected in the rare original folder.

Contemporary half calf, spine with four raised bands, richly gilt and title lettered in gilt, u.e.g., hinges cracking. First edition. Séraphin Couvreur (1835-1919), French sinologist and Jesuit, came to China in 1870. He spent the greater part of his life at the Jesuit residence at Sien-hsien where he was professor at the Seminary. He complied several Chinese dictionaries and translated many of the Chinese classical works. Couvreur was the creator of the EFEO Chinese transcription method which was used in most of the French speaking world to transliterate Chinese until the middle of 20th century when it was replaced by Hanyu Pinyin. Contemporary brown morocco, ruled in gilt, spine richly gilt with five raised bands, marbled endpapers, corners worn. Provenance: Bibliotheca Tiliana with bookplate and small stamps.First edition of this magnificent work which is the first substantial one on the subject. Dabry de Thiersant was French consul in Shanghai and Canton in the 1860s and an avid collector of zoological specimens during this time. His work covers the fishing culture in China including descriptions of fishing gear and different species of fish. Thirty-six of the plates depict fishing nets and other equipment, and the other plates illustrate different types of fish together with detailed descriptions. Dabry de Thiersant found 850 different species of fish in the Far East, of which many were unknown to European naturalists at the time. Some light staining to the plates but a wonderful copy of a scare title. Not in Löwendahl. Cordier BS 1537. Nissen ZB1, 1018.

Read at the Society of Antiquaries, Feb. 5, 1767. 4to. Pp. 222-6. With a large folding engraved plate of Tatar sepulchres (burial chambers) and four engraved plates depicting various objects found in the graves.2.Observations on some Tartarian Antiquities, Described in the preceding Article. By Reinhold Forster, F.A.S. Read at the Society of Antiquaries. Feb. 26, 1767. 4to. Pp. 227-35. With two engraved plates depicting Tatar idols. Bound in modern quarter calf on marbled paper covered boards. Some minor browning. Paper is brittle, some tears at margins, and inner margins of the plates have been strengthened. First edition of these scarce papers on the tumuli or tombs of the Tatars. Demidoff's letter refers to the works of Strahlenberg and Bell and further describes the discoveries made by a Russian expedition sent out to open some of the tombs. The five plates are engraved from original drawings made during the expedition and published here for the first time. Forster's account is devoted to the writing and literature of the Tatars; various burial ceremonies; dating of the graves, etc. Paul Demidoff was a Russian traveller and patron of scientific education. Johann Forster was a German explorer and scientist.

. Small 8vo. Pp. viii, 159. Contemporary half calf, spine richly gilt, rubbed, top of spine chipped. Copy of Axel De la Gardie with his filt monogram on spine. This is a narrative of a voyage to South Africa, India and China. The author was a Swedish medical doctor and professor in anatomy and physiology. He was particulary interested in the natural history of the places he visited. The voyage went to the Cape and from there continued to Mocambique, Zanzibar, Aden (Yemen), Muskat, Bombay, Singapore before reaching Macao and (Whampoa) Canton. His interesting description of Canton contains information about crops and vegetation, opium smoking and its trade, foot binding, tea and bamboo, medical practices, pirates, etc. Cordier BS 2505. Not in Mendelssohn.

The second part contains several indexes listed in seven different languages; Chinese, Pali, Sinhalese, Tibetan, Mongolian, Burmese and Siamese. An account of missionary activities and persecution of five Spanish martyrs and some Chinese Christians in Fujian province of China. Pedro Sanz came to China in 1715 and served as a missionary for 31 years. In 1730 he was appointed vicar apostolic of Fukien and titular bishop of Mauricasto. Together with the other four Spanish Dominicians; Francesco Serrano, Joaquin Royo, Juan Alcober and Francisco Diaz he was imprisoned in 1746. Sanz was executed in 1747 and the others in 1748. This is an enlarged version of a work titled: "La christiandad de Fogan en la provincia de Fo kien en el Imperio de China cruelmente perseguida ... " published in Manila 1748. Cordier BS 1210.
