He had heard of a large & pedulia diamond called the Moonstone & by the massacre of its keepers was able to steal it out of the forehead of a sacred idol. But one of the guardians pronounced a horrible curse on those with unlawful possession of the gem, and when it disappeared after Herncastle's death, tragedy followed tragedy.
