I.B.Tauris, UK, 2006. First Edition, Hardcover. Very Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. 9781845112745 304 pages. Available Now. Missing Dustcover. Book Description: Over the last decade, at a time when the forces of 'Islamic fundamentalism' appear to be the dominant face of Islam in the West, a vibrant and equally significant discourse has emerged from a number of prominent Muslim thinkers who wish to reformulate some of the main premises of Islamic theology and jurisprudence. The central goal of these 'New Islamists' is to reinterpret popular notions of Islam that are consistent with the tenets of modern life. Their work touches on three broad themes: Islamic hermeneutics; Islam's relationship with modernity; and the relationship of Islam with democracy and civil rights. The thinkers whose work is showcased in this book represent some of the most notable Muslim intellectuals of our time. They include Tariq Ramadan, Abdul Rahman Abbad, Fethullah Gulen, Chandra Muzzafar, Yusuf al Qaradawy, Nasr Abu Zaid and Mohammed Arkoun. Despite their importance in their own countries, seldom before have their voices been heard by western audiences. This timely volume, which places the life, career and arguments of each thinker in their proper national and historical contexts, remedies that neglect. : Review: Prof. Mehran Kamrava has produced a timely and telling collection writings : by creative Muslim thinkers who views were neglected by those obsessed with : the utterances of the fundamentalists. A G Noorani -- Frontline : About the Author: Mehran Kamrava is Professor of Political Science at California State University, Northridge. He is the author of nine previous books on aspects of Middle Eastern politics and the politics of Islam, which include The Modern Middle East: A Political History Since World War I (2005), Politics and Society in the Developing World (2000) and Democracy in the Balance: Culture and Society in the Middle East (1998). Song of Songs, Ruth, Lamentations, Ecclesiastes, Esther (People's Bible)
Sinclair-Stevenson, UK. Softcover. Very Good Condition. 9780953739820 136 pages. Available Now. Synopsis: In this interpretive translation of the Five Scrolls, the variety and scope of the Bible is apparent, both as a religious text and as a work of great literature. In the Song of songs, the yearning for love is combined with a fine expression of eroticism, and the Book of Ruth is the great short story. Lamentation reveals the heartbreak of a prophetover the ultimate disaster of his people - the destruction of the Temple and of Jerusalem. Ecclesiastes is a philosophical treatise, bordering on cynicism, but still offering hope that, amidst the vanities and tears, youth, love, companionship and wisdom can still bring joy to human life. S for Esther, here is, surprisingly, a fantasy comedy. Size: 1.3 x 12.7 x 17.8 cm. 136 pages. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 500 grams. BROWN WILLIAM ADAMS, Your Church and Mine : A Book for Catholics and Protestants
BROWN WILLIAM ADAMS
Your Church and Mine : A Book for Catholics and Protestants
Chapman & Hall, UK, 1935. First Edition, Hardcover. Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. A Book for Catholics and Protestants. xv, 307 pages, size 8.75 inches tall by 5.5 inches, with an index. ' This is a book about the Christian Church. It has grown out of the author's conviction that the church, in the familiar sense of the institution of religion, deserves a greater place in the loyalty and affection of Christians than is given it by many Protestants to-day. Unless this is done not only will the faith of the individual Christian be deprived of its normal source of nourishment and inspiration but Christianity itself as a world-conquering religion will fail to maintain itself successfully against the rival faiths by which its claim to universal supremacy is being every day more aggressively challenged '. Book - in Good red boards with gilt lettering - some marking to the boards and light bumping to the extreme ends of the spine. Contents, previous owner's inscription to the free front endpaper, light marking to the page edges, otherwise clean and tightly bound. A Rare Title. Quantity Available: 1. PEEL ALBERT, Thirty-Five to Fifty
PEEL ALBERT
Thirty-Five to Fifty
Independant Press, UK, 1938. First Edition, Hardcover. Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. Signed by Author. 248 pages, size 8 inches tall by 5.25 inches. Preface : Readers of the Congregational Quarterly have often urged me to gather together some of the articles I have contributed to that journal, more especially the personal chatty articles which have appeared under the heading, 'On Life and Books.' Such articles make up most of this volume. To them I have added: (1) A few notes on statesmen and scholars I have known, written mostly at the time of their deaths; (2) Contributions which are concerned with pastoral life; (3) Articles on cricket which have been welcomed by readers of the Congregational Quarterly - no doubt as a relief from its other pages! Two other sections perhaps need a word of explanation. The first, 'Observations and Opinions,' consists in the main of editorial paragraphs. Few books I have ever read gave me more delight than the two volumes of selections from the writings of Robertson Nicoll, published after his death, especially People and Books. If these 'Observations and Opinions' during fifteen years give to readers one-tenth the pleasure I received from Nicoll's selections, their inclusion will be amply justified. 'In Lighter Vein' contains some of the stories which have leavened the Editorial from time to time. From the way people have written about these, I sometimes suspect that our dignified Quarterly is in much the same position as an American journal for which I used to write a weekly letter. On the first page was the Editorial, and on the back a column of 'Risibles,' and cynics were accustomed to declare that they began reading the journal with the 'Risibles' and then read backward with steadily decreasing interest! All these sections are included between an article, 'A Young Congregationalist to Young Congregationalists,' written in the first number of the Congregational Quarterly when I was thirty-five, and that written recently, 'On Reaching Fifty. Albert Peel.' Book - in heavily marked green boards with black lettering but spine nice and bright. Contents, light browning to the endpapers, otherwise clean and tightly bound. Signed and dedicated by the author. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 500 grams. Category: Religion & Theology; Hardbacks; Signed by Author. Inventory No: A144-1090.

Ashgate Publishing Limited, UK, 2001. First Edition, Hardcover. Fine Condition. 9780754614845 172 Pages. Both boards a little marked. Proclaiming the Gospel in a Secular Age explores how a religion, Christian or any other focussing on a personal God, may be communicated to people in a secular age. With people uninterested, uninformed or unbelieving in the Godward dimension and in any particular religious tradition, David Attfield claims that appropriate communication is essential. Before direct communication can begin, some background conditions in the targeted population must be satisfied, and communication then requires a series of stages. This book offers an in-depth examination of seven particular species for communication: evangelism; inter-faith dialogue; nurture of adults; nurture of children; religious education in schools; the academic study of religion; professional ministerial formation. Each form of communication is defined, theories applied, and the training of communicators outlined. David Attfield offers fresh insights and practical suggestions which will be of interest to a wide-range of students, academics and those in ministerial training and practice, with an interest in pastoral theology and religious education. David G. Attfield is a retired Anglican priest and tutor at College of St Hilde & St Bede, Durham, UK. He has published extensively on religious education. Contents: Introduction: Autobiographical; Defining the key terms; Species of communication; Assumptions of the theory; Current forms of Religious Communication and their Problems: Church decline and its causes; The normal process of communication; A special process of communication; Gender and communication; A new positive approach; The requirements of communication; The Core Theory: The four-stage model; Adding the fifth stage; The background conditions; The Second, the communicator?s model; Background Conditions: Verbal ability; Autonomy; Opportunity; Nourishing the Sense of God: The sense of God; Nourishing the sense of God; Assessing Stage IV; The case for God?s reality; Motivation and Myers-Briggs: The Myers-Briggs typology; Motivation by type and temperament; Applying Myers-Briggs in communication; Other categorisations; Learning, Exploration and Commitment: Learning; Exploration; Religious truth-criteria; Reformed epistemology; The stage of commitment; Application: Evangelism; Inter-faith dialogue; Nurture (of adults); Child nurture; Religious education; Academic study of religion; Ministerial formation; Objections: The social gospel; Grace & human effort; Lack of resources; Remediation; Training the communicators: Who are the communicators?; Evangelism; Inter-faith dialogue; Nurture of adults; Child nurture; Religious education; The academic study of religion; Ministerial formation; A Concluding Vision: Summary of the whole argument; The sower and the seed; A final view; Bibliography; Index. BAKER-FLETCHER, GARTH KASIMU
Bible Witness in Black Churches
Palgrave Macmillan, UK, 2009. First Edition, Hardcover. Fine Condition. 9780230617711 208 Pages. What is the proper place of the Bible in Black Churches? Baker-Fletcher explores the Bible as a uniquely authoritative text within the context of Black church worship and service to the world. He analyzes the Bible's central role in three forms of witness: translation, proclamation, and empowerment. Trusting that the Bible is authentically 'God's Word' that uses human language, Baker-Fletcher affirms the uniqueness of the Bible in the church's multiple tasks of preaching, teaching, and prophetic ministries. Finally, finding proverbial wisdom in rap music, the book concludes with a case study of the book of Romans. Book Description: What is the proper place of the Bible in Black Churches? As many are revisiting both the sources and methods of Black Theology, this book brings a needed reminder that engagement with the biblical text as having a primary authority is absolutely necessary if a theology is to speak authentically from and for the Black Christian tradition. I would recommend this book for classes in Black Theology and others that seek to explore theology and the Black Church. --Stephen G.
