The Times Weekly Edition, London Thursday March 12 1936 : Special Empire Colour Number - His Majesty the King
The Times, London. 1936, 1st Edition. No Binding, with dust jacket. Complete. Less than two months into his reign this is a special Empire edition of 'The Times' in honour of King Edward VIII. Of particular interest in this issue are the four specially taken colour photographs of the King and of Queen Mary with her grandchildren, and of the reports of the consequences, alarm, opinion and photographs of the German re-occupation of the Rhineland the previous weekend ; the King's visit to Clydeside to see the final construction stages of the Queen Mary ; the new armed forces budgets ;and pride that it was now taking just nine days to fly to Cape Town! This copy is tatty about the edges and the front pages are tanned. Nonetheless, the stapled binding is strong and sure. Within, the pages are in good, healthy condition. They are clear, clean (apart from tanning from age), not crisped, fascinating. This edition was at a most critical time as the Nazis knew what they were doing, and the British government knew what the King was doing in his private life. An edition with bated breath. fk. Fair/No Jacket.

All fully bound in leather with gilt decoration - to fascias, spines and edges - and titling. All have marbled papertrims and frontis and end papers. This is a FABULOUS set of this popular, loquacious history of Europe (with the first major account of the French Revolution). It is smart, handsome, gentlemanly and very clubbable. Some of the books have wear from shelving and are scuffed but this only adds a genial dignity and character. All have binder labels (T. Sowler, Manchester - the very model of a Victorian businessman) on the front pastedowns. Spines have five ridges and six panels. The Atlas (108 pages - published 1850) contains maps of countries and towns and plans of 'battles and sieges &c.' The covers are worn and scuffed. Within there are some small storage marks about. The pages are clean, startlingly bright and clear, finely detailed and the colours for various regiments fresh. Volume 1 (633 pgs; 1849): wear to edges and spine, but dignified and secure. The contents are tight and clean. Covers 1774-1789. Vol 2 (693 pgs; 1849). In very good, handsome condition. Light wear, bright gilt. Inside, the contents are clean and fresh. There is a silk bookmark. 1789 - 1793. Vol 3 (635 pgs; 1749). The stamped decoration (as with all other volumes) is neat and unworn. The spine has some wear but is benign and kindly. The pages are clean and comfortable. Covers 1795. Vol. 4 (654 pages; 1849). A lovely atmospheric copy. At last the story moves on beyond France. The pages are fresh. 1795-1799. Vol V (658 pgs). Neat, contented, bright. 1799 -1801. Vol 6 (670 pgs). Nelson, Pitt, Napoleon! The odd storage stain. Otherwise very clean. 1801-05. Vol 7 (690 pgs). Some age related marks. Tidy and handsome. Fox, Prussia, Clive of India! 1805-07. Vol 8 (696 pgs). Tight, confident, clean. Some cover wear. Wellesley, Napoleon, Peninsula Wars. 1807-09. Vol 9. A happy book. Some wear. Spain, George III! Pages exceptional. Vol. 10 (630 pgs). Some scuffing and wear. Wellington, the Emperor, South America, Turks, Russians! Pages very clean. 1810-12. Vol 11 (637 pgs). Some wear to the covers. Contents are smart. Moscow, Germany, Generals! 1812-13. Vol 12 (640 pgs). Confident, benign copy with some spine wear. Pages very secure and certain. Wellington in France, Blucher, Napoleon on the run. 1813-14. Vol 13 (664 pgs). Edge and spine wear. Pages vigorous and healthy. Come-uppances, America, Vienna decides! 1814-1815 [1814 is the date when Alison had the idea of this history]. Vol 14 (644 pgs). Some aged wear to the covers. The pages are startlingly healthy. Waterloo, St Helena, The First Reform Bill, contemporary judgements. 1815 and index. Oh happy person who owns this THRILLING story as told in these wonderful and REMARKABLE volumes. fk. ARCHER, THOMAS
The War in Egypt and the Soudan - an Episode in the History of the British Empire Being a Descriptive Account of the Scenes and Events of That Great Drama, and Sketches of the Principal Actors in It.
Blackie and Son, Glasgow. 1887, 1st Edition. Hardcover. The above book number refers to the full four volume set of the history of the War in Egypt and Sudan. There is no marked publication date but the preface is dated 1887. These are former library (Military/ Militere Museum Library/ Biblioteek) and there are stamps throughout all four volumes to verify this. The books have been sadly stored. Their general condition is poor. All four volumes have much wear, marking and storage damage and light fading. All four are light worn at the right hand quarters of their front covers. This also affects the back cover left edge. There is much wear to all extremities, corners, the head and feet of all spines and their bindings. All have fragile front and end papers (the frontispage of Volume four is loose - it is included). All have a previous owner inscription (volume four directs the reader to the mention of a relation of the owner). The paper trim edges are tarnished. Annotations are scatter-gunned through the volumes. Despite their general fragility and disrepair, the generalised foxing and erratic, noisy binding, all pages are present and complete. This passionate, thorough, thrilling history is told on clear, stoic, brave, sound pages. They may be read with confidence and comfort. The illustration plates are thrilling and clear. Age and robustness are common friends throughout. fk. Poor/No Jacket.

HUME, D AND SMOLLETT, T ; HUGHES, REV T S
The History of England from the Invasion of Julius Caesar to the End of the Reign of George II with the Continuation, from the Accession of George the Third to the Accession of Queen Victoria by (the Rev . ) - 15 Volumes
Bell and Daldy, London. 1864, 3rd Edition. Hardcover, with dust jacket. 15 Volumes in the set (complete). In very attractive and clubbable condition. All volumes match. All are bound in tan calf leather with embossed titling and decoration. David Hume eventually made his money and his legacy-moniker with his history of Britain. Although rejected by the Establishment it was a massive bestseller in its time and was the standard work of history on the Sceptred Isle until Macauley. Some quarter of a century after his death, the Rev Hughes - a much esteemed historian - was asked to update and continue the history series. His appointment was received with joy and satisfaction. Of this set the first eight belong to Hume and remaining seven to Hughes. All are in most pleasing condition. All have marbled pagetrims. All are benign, calm and confident in their stateliness. Most of the books have knocks to the corners. Shelving wear is mild-mannered. The faces are handsome. The gilt is fresh. The spines are elegant. All have marbled end papers that are in good, languid condition. Volume 2 has mild foxing about ; Volume 3 has surface staining to the front face; within the initial pages have stains to the edges. There is occasional foxing. Volumes 4 and 5 have dustings of foxing. Volume 5 has some scuffing to the face. Volume 6 too, has storage scuffing to the front cover. Volume 7 has deeper scoring to the back cover, from storage. Volume 9 has some light storage staining to the front pages. Volume 10 has light surface staining to the back cover; within, the frontispages are marked from storage. Volume 12 has some page creasing to corners. Volume 13 has, on its frontispiece, storage staining. Volume 14 too has mild storage marks to the frontispiece. This is replicated in Volume 15. Of course, all books have some age related spotting - but this is but freckling and scattered. Otherwise, the condition of the set is most elegant and would dignify any library or room. fn.
