Notation in ink on second free endpaper "Les Bucoliques De Virgile tradiutes en vers Francais Par Langeac" with previous owner's name on reverse also in ink - both inscriptions appear contemporary to publication. Foxing on most pages, small worn hole through first several pages starting at half title page through to second page of introduction only. International Book Company/ John W. Lovell, 1889. First Edition Thus. Hardcover. Brown cloth over boards, with gilt spinal designs and titles. Solidly bound block, well adhered to its case. Cloth shows modest lightening and slight wear at extremeties, crisp corners with a trace of threads. Some discoloration to cloth on front board, and a small section of gilt worn off upper design near the head of the spine. Doyle's first book, published in the U.K. in 1890 was pirated in the U.S. and this is such a "Pre-Publication" copy. Very sturdy, page edges darkened from prolonged shelving in a previous home. RARE in this condition.. Very Good+ with no dust jacket.
