Memorabilia Sophomorum, Edited and Published by the Freshman Class of the College of New Jersey, Princeton, New Jersey, June, 1858.
Princeton, NJ, 1958. 1958. - Octavo, 9-1/8 inches high by 5-3/4 inches wide. Softcover, bound in printed creamy white wrappers. The covers are stained, darkened and creased with a piece out from the tail of the spine. 68 pages. Good. A satirical publication by the Freshman class of the College of New Jersey, now Princeton University, with humorous contributions by unidentified students. Contributions include poems, soliloquies, essays, theatrical scenes playfully poking fun at themselves, classes, professors and academia. The poem, "Characteristics of Sophomores" includes such lines as "..But be content the Sophomores' faults to note / Those of the boy, those of the gray-haired dote: / A class, in part, of boys just from the breast, / The patriarchs and clowns compose the rest.." followed by stanzas addressing specific students by name. A theatrical scene is titled "Chesterfield Jones and his Pa-Pa". An essay addresses "Warren and His Coat", another "Billr Udder and His Position, alias Helm and His Grades", and yet more such as "A Second Paga (ninny)". Even the few pages of "Advertisement" touch on satire as does the Book Review of "The Poetical Works of Raving Mad Cadwalader" proclaiming that "His 'complete Works' comprise two quarto volumes, beautifully gilt, and well worth a place in any nursery library. The style is most pathetic and entertaining.." RARE in commerce. Good .

(Johnson, Fridolf; and Browne, Howard).
An Original Unused Proof for the Color Illustrated Dust Jacket for Howard Browne's First Book "Warrior of the Dawn".
Chicago: Reilly & Lee, (1943). (1943). Chicago: Reilly & Lee, (1943). (1943). Very good. ORIGINAL PROOF FOR THE SUPERB COLOR PICTORIAL DUST JACKET ILLUSTRATED BY FRIDOLF JOHNSON - An 8-12 inch high by 21 inch wide color illustrated dust wrapper for Howard Browne's first book "Warriors of the Dawn". Illustrated in color from a drawing by Fridolf Johnson, the jacket's front panel depicts the protagonist Tharn, a Cro-Magnon, climbing a rope with one hand as he flees pursuing spear wielding men. Attired in a red loincloth and wielding a primitive knife in his other hand, Tharn looks down on his pursuers from above the bluish-tinged stone carved dwellings from the doors of which golden light shines out. The title and author's name are boldly printed in red across the top of the jacket's front panel and spine. The original price is printed above the blurb printed on the jacket's front flap and "A War Bond Message" appears on the rear flap. The Jacket is only folded once vertically along the rear edge of its spine with the expected rubbing along the fold. There is some very minor light foxing to the white flaps. Very good.

This an original proof for the dust jacket to Howard Browne's first book "Warrior of the Dawn", the author's only fantasy novel aimed at older boys. A Tarzan-like adventure, the novel is the story of Tharn, a Cro-Magnon which was one of the first truly human races. Penned during the period of the Second World War, there is a hint of patriotism to the story which is further emphasized by the jacket's blurb which states: "Give Tharn a tommy-gun instead of a flint- tipped spear, and he would be very much at home with the Marines in the South Pacific".

The science fiction editor and mystery writer Howard Browne (1908-1999) was managing editor for the pulp periodicals "Amazing Stories" and "Fantastic Adventures" beginning in 1942. In addition to his novels and stories, he wrote for several television series and films including "Maverick", "Ben Casey", and "The Virginians". His novel "Thin Air" was used as the basis for an episode of "The Rockford Files" titled "Sleight of Hand" and also for a an episode of "Simon & Simon" titled, appropriately enough "Thin Air".

An illustrator and artist as well as a fine pressman, the jacket's illustrator Fridolf Johnson was an editor of American Artist Magazine until his retirement in the 1970's. As a graphic artist, he designed title panels for Hollywood movies and art & typography for advertising as well as dust jacket illustrations. He compiled and edited the Knopf book "Rockwell Kent: An Anthology of His Work" and the significant reference work "A Treasury of Bookplates From the Renaissance to the Present". Very good .

Six issues, each with their own original pictorial wrappers, bound together in light gray boards backed with a brown suede spine. An illustrated pictorial title label is mounted on the front cover. The covers are soiled and the spine is heavily chipped and splitting along the joints. 143 & [3] consecutively numbered pages. These 6 issues are each illustrated with full-page color cover illustrations, numerous textual and full-page monochrome illustrations and a total of 12 tipped-in plates, including works by Dan Smith, Herb Roth, L.F. Conrey, E.H. Miner, Gordon Ross, and Archie Gunn, among others. The rear hinge is cracked. Good.

As early as 1896, a group of Greenwich Village artists, poets and other artistic and literary personalities were meeting weekly at Maria Del Prato's Italian restaurant on MacDougal Street. The group, which became known as The Pleaides Club, included Paul Du Chaillu, Mark Twain, Stephen Crane, William Garrison, Clara Louise Kellogg and other luminaries among its early members. As it grew and needed larger quarters, the group first moved to the Black Cat then to the Hungaria, eventually settling in at the Hotel Brevoort in 1906. The club's mission was simply to provide a convivial and friendly audience to inexperienced artists through its weekly meetings and publication of their work in its yearbook, The Pleiad. Good .
