Blanchard, Jim (Ed.)
A Thousand Miles of Prairie: The Manitoba Historical Society and the History of Western Canada
Winnipeg, Manitoba, University of Manitoba Press, 2002. First Edition, First Printing. Softcover. pp. ix, 259. 8vo. Appears unread; as new. A Thousand Miles of Prairie is a fascinating look at Manitoba's early boom years (1880-1910) through the eyes and words of some of the most interesting personalities of early Winnipeg. This collection brings together 14 pieces from the first decades of the Manitoba Historical Society, when its lectures were attended by the provinceís political and cultural elite. Jim Blanchard has chosen selections that give us a vivid taste of the diversity of intellectual life in turn of the century Manitoba. Besides writings by early historians such as George Bryce and Charles Bell, he includes a paper by the young Ernest Thompson Seton, who writes about his attempts to raise prairie chickens. There is also a description of the last passenger pigeons found in Manitoba. The collection includes lively personal reminscences, such as Gilbert McMicken, Canada's first spymaster, talking about foiling a Fenian raid on Winnipeg, and Archbishop Samuel Matheson, who tells about his boyhood adventures in the great Red River floods of the 1860s.

Boon, Thomas C. B.
Winnipeg Conference of 1980: An Account of the Winnipeg Conference of 1890; between Representatives of the Province of Canada, the Province of Rupert's Land and the Diocese of New Westminster, Held on August 15th and 16th of That Year.
Toronto, Ontario, Canada & Montreal, Quebec, The Canadian Church Historical Society, 1960. First Edition, First Printing. Card Covers. pp. 38. 8vo. measuring 10" x 7". Light blue stapled card covers. Bright, clean, and unmarked. Fine. To all students and others interested in the story of the Anglican Church of Canada the value of this publication can hardly be overestimated. At the Conference described in the following pages the obstacles that threatened to ruin the carefully drawn up plan for the consolidation of the whole Canadian church in a General Synod were faced and to a large extent overcome. Much of the credit for the success of the Conference was due to the skilful leadership of the presiding officer, Robert Machray, Bishop of Rupert's Land".

Booth, G. Raymond; [Anti-Semitism]
What They Say [About Jews] ; by G. Raymond Booth, Executive Secretary of the Canadian National Committee on Refugees and Victims of Political Persecution
[Toronto, Ontario, Canada], Reprinted from the "American Friend" | Canadian National Committee on Refugees and Victims of Political Persecution, N.D. [Circa 1938-1948?]. First Edition, First Printing. Stapled Wraps. pp. 7. 8vo. measuring 9.5 x 21.5 cm. Plain, twice-stapled, wrappers with stylized title in black. A remarkable seven-page pamphlet evidently re-printed from "The American Friend" wherein the author offers a strident defence of Jews, and those of Jewish extraction in the face of virulent popular and institutional anti-semitism which pervaded Europe, and North America amidst the Second World War, and the ongoing Holocaust. The author addresses a variety of (often contradictory) and historic accusations employed against Jews in concerted efforts by anti-semites to prevent their immigration, and integration into Western society: ("They says Jews are different"; "They say Jews are not ethical"; "They say the Jews are never farmers"; "They say Jews are not patriotic"; "They say the Jews are Communists"; "They say the Jews are anti-social big business people"; "They say the Jews are dirty"; "They say the Jews are noisy"; "They say the Jews never assimilate". Each statement is followed by a firm denouncement by the author who then offers examples for why such stereotypes are patently false, misleading and ultimately rooted in historical anti-semitic tropes with no basis in reality. Net period ink name to the upper-right margin of the cover, some loss affecting the upper-right corner of pages (no loss of text), contents otherwise without blemish; very good. Unrecorded in OCLC. Not found in Fisher, Peel, BAC/LAC, UoM Archives & Special Collections, et al. Rare indeed. .
