London, John Murray, 1857. 1st edition. Hardcover. pp. ix, 687. Thick 8vo. Handsomely bound in contemporary 3/4 leather over marbleds boards. With folding lithographed frontispiece of Victoria Falls (signed in the plate by Whymper), a steel engraving of the author facing page 1, (untinted) full-page engravings and line drawings in the text, and two folding maps tabbed-in at the end. Three page 8s, second marked with an asterisk, and third with 'dagger'. No advertisements at end of book. Three book plates of previous owners: the first, a small (one inch by one inch) armorial leather label, is of Robert Hoe (1839-1909, a New York printing press manufacturer, book collector and founder of the Grolier Club. The second, a more conventional armorial bookplate printed on paper, is of Lewis Montgomery Bond, a Philadelphia tea merchant. The third, a printed label affixed to the inside of the rear board, is of Charles Williston McAlpin (1865-1942), a member of a prominent family involved in the industrial and social development of New York City in the late 19th and first half of the 20th centuries. The extremities of the boards are modertaely rubbed, as is the marbled paper on the front board. The hinges are tight, and the contents tightly bound and free of foxing or soiling. Overall, an interesting association copy of the second state of the first edition in good+, to very good, condition. .

The map has some early repairs to the reverse, and shows some creasing and age-toning. Some signatures standing proud but no pages (except the front free endpaper) are loose. Contents remarkably clean. Two parts bound in one. The first part of the book, which contains the folding map entitled 'Plan du Voyage de St. Cloud', was published in 1762 as the fourth edition. The second part of the book, which follows immediately after the first part, is entitled 'Voyage et Retour de St. Cloud; par mer et par terre. Premiere Parties. Nouvelle Edition, Augumentee des Annales & Antiquites de S. Cloud', and was published in Paris by Duchesne in 1760. 'Revue, corrigee & augumentee, avec une Carte tres-exacte, dont le Plan a ete leve sur les lieux.'. Ill.: folding map.

Three old French postage stamps tabbed on to first blank front free endpaper; triangular piece of flimsy paper tipped-in on title page stating 'Brentanos / 592 / Rouge'. (Brentanos was, and is, a famous book store). Edges rubbed. Binding tight, contents clean. A good copy. The text is in French. Max O'Rell was the pseudonym of Leon Paul Blouet (1848-1903), a French author and journalist. In 1872 he travelled to England to serve as foreign correspondent for several French newspapers, and in 1876 became the French master at St. Paul's School in London. His first book, 'John Bull et son Ile' ('John Bull and his Island') was published in 1883, and proved to be such a major success that, in 1884, he resigned his post. Several similar volumes followed, including this one on life in America. He was very popular as a lecturer in both England and the United States. .
