The illustrations are in the form of a title-page vignette, and head and tail pieces. William Falconer (1732-1769) was a Scottish poet whose most famous work was 'The Shipwreck', first published in 1762. He served on sailing ships all his adult life, and was lost at sea in 1769. There is a lesser recurring character in Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey-Maturin series, who is a poet, whose works are actually those of Falconer. This copy is re-backed, with original spine re-laid. Boards scuffed. Rear board shows some staining. Hinges restored. Marbled endpapers. Charming inscription in very elegant hand to second blank page. Contents show some foxing throughout; pages 131/132 lack small piece to margin of bottom corner. Overall, still a sturdy copy in good condition. Ill.: black & white illustrations.
