"In 1829 Jonathan Martin, brother of John Martin, the famous painter of "Belshazzar's Feast", became infamous by setting fire to York Minster.. In childhood his sister was murdered before his eyes; as a young man he was press-ganged for the Navy..and made numerous attempts to desert. Returning to work as a tanner, he set about the reformation of the Church of England on Methodist principles and..was arrested for threatening to shoot the Bishop of Oxford. Confined to asylums, he made a sensational escap, and spent years as an iteinerant preacher, supporting himself by the sale of nearly 15,000 copies of his "Life", until his escapade at York consigned him to Bedlam till his death."
