Palmer, A. H. (Alfred Herbert)
Samuel Palmer A Memoir. Also a catalogue of his works, including those exhibited by the Fine Art Society 1881, and an account of the Milton Series of drawings, by L. R. Valpy.
The Fine Art Society Limited, London, 1882. First Edition, Hardcover (Quarter Leather). Fair Condition. bound in olive boards with leather spine. The frontispiece is an original Samuel Palmer etching ("Christmas" or "Folding the Last Sheep") dating to 1850 but unpublished until its publication in this book. (the etching has often been removed by various cognoscenti making complete copies such as this fairly scarce). Further illustrated by 12 autotypes (including a photographic portrait print of Palmer) & 9 woodcuts of which 5 are on separate sheets & 4 within the text. Illustrated title page to the reverse of which has been glued a newspaper review of the book from a copy of 'The Spectator' (dated February 24, 1883) & also a short obituary of the artist Edward Calvert who died in that year. Samuel Palmer was one of the most original artists Britain has produced & first exhibited Turner-inspired works at the Royal Academy at the age of fourteen.. Palmer met William Blake in 1824. Blake's influence can be seen in work he produced over the next ten years and generally reckoned to be his greatest. He embarked on an intensely personal journey that led to an astonishing outpouring of mystical drawings and later to England's first artistic colony, "The Ancients," based in the idyllic landscape of Shoreham. This book contains the first major writings on Palmer, which were published for a retrospective exhibition in 1881. They include a biography by his son, A. H. Palmer. Loosely inserted are some extracts from art auction catalogues relating to sales of Palmer's works. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. pp. ii, 105 + 3. Some wear to top, bottom & edges of spine. no Dust Jacket as published.. three initial letters (small) to margin page 92. All edges red. Gilt titles spine & front. The Scolar Press Ltd. Menston, Yorkshire, 1971. Facsimile Edition, Hardcover (Original Cloth). Near Fine Condition/No Dust Jacket. When Sir Joshua Reynolds collected his first seven discourses together for publication there were three main traditions of art theory in Britain. There was the empiricism of Hogarth; secondly there was the idealist classicism; & the third tradition, to which Reynolds subscribed, was that of empiricist classicism initiated by Junius, popularised by Dryden's translation of Du Fresnoy's De Arte Graphica (1695), and manifested in Richardson's Essay on the Theory of Painting (1725) and Algarotti's Essay on Painting (1764). These literary movements were mainly associated with, respectively, the artistic movements of native portraiture, 'Greek' neoclassicism, and 'French/Italian neoclassicism. First Thus. Schuhl, Pierre-Maxime
Platon et l'art de son temps: Arts Plastiques (Plato and the Art of his time: Plastic Arts)
Felix Alcan, Paris, 1933. First Edition, Softcover. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 123 pages. Sherriffs at the Cinema. A Collection of Caricatures from the World of Film
Simon Bond & Nicholas Bromley (produced by), undated. First Edition, Hardcover (Original Cloth), Illustrated by: Robert Sherriffs. Near Fine Condition/Good. This edition is limited to one thousand copies, (this copy being unnumbered); gilt vignette (Marlene Dietrich) front cover; red end-papers; illustrated in black and white. To the front is an introduction & a brief biography of the artist (by Nicholas Bromley). Sherriffs attended Edinburgh College of Art where he initially studied heraldic design in addition to fine art. Influenced by Aubrey Beardsley and Alphonse Mucha, he later recalled that his three years at art school “confirmed my previous conviction that figures and faces were patterns to be studied and memorised - not patiently drawn from life". His first published caricature, of actor John Barrymore in the Bystander, was spotted by Beverley Nichols, who asked him to illustrate the 'Woad' series of celebrity profiles that he wrote in the Sketch. Sheriffs went on to produce regular full-page theatre and film drawings for the magazine. From 1927, he contributed drawings to the Radio Times. He illustrated a number of books, beginning in 1930 with Christopher Marlowe's The Life and Death of Tamburlaine the Great. He also worked as film caricaturist on Punch from 1948 until his death in 1960. Limited Edition. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. unpaginated. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact.
