London, England: Sadler's Well, 1943. Original photograph with integral text. 14 x 9 cm.. Promenade was a very slight suite of dances, linked by the person of a quavery old lepidopterist who continued his singleminded pursuit of butterflies no matter what was going on around him. The music had been selected from the works of Haydn (mostly from symphonies or piano sonatas, orchestrated by Gordon Jacob), by Edwin Evans, and he described the resulting score as "a short stroll through the works of Haydn/' It was entirely delightful and, in fact, so good that it rather overwhelmed the flimsy choreography. When well danced, however, Promenade was an attractive opening ballet, and in its early days it was exceptionally well cast. Gordon Hamilton was the Lepidopterist, Pauline Clayden danced the gawky "Promenade" solo, Beryl Grey (and later Pamela May) with David Paltenghi gave a nice melancholy to the "Rendezvous" pas de deux y and the gay little pas de trois for two classical and one character dancer was brilliantly performed by Moira Shearer, Alexis Rassine and Ray Powell. Shearer never looked prettier than in the crisp pink and white costume she wore in this ballet, and the choreo- graphy exactly suited her dainty elegance. Her successors had an impossible task in following her, and none of them ever made any- thing of the part. .
