It's probably the earliest Scandinavian work of its kind. Charles Albert Kann, Swedish born but lived most of his life abroad including several years in Copenhagen. Makassar was already the dominant trading center of eastern Indonesia when the Portuguese arrived in the 16th century. Later the Dutch arrived, built a trading station in 1607, and replaced the Portuugese as colonial masters in 1667. This account describes the natural history, manners and customs of the inhabitants, government, religion, ceremonies, etc. Gervaise was a French missionary who resided in Siam for about four years. This narrative is based on the author's journal kept during his six years of travels. He visited most of the Australian colonies and Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania), made natural history observations and collected a variable herbarium which was sent to Kew.
