Makassar was already the dominant trading centre in the eastern part of the East Indian archipelago when the Portuguese arrived in the 16th century. Later the Dutch arrived, built a trading post in 1607, and replaced the Portuguese as colonial masters in 1667. This account describes the natural history, manners and customs of the inhabitants, government, religion, ceremonies, etc. Gervaise was a French missionary who lived in Siam for some years.
