[CHINA - WOOD PANEL WITH ANCIENT COINS AND CHARMS]., China, probably end of 18th century.
[CHINA - WOOD PANEL WITH ANCIENT COINS AND CHARMS].
China, probably end of 18th century.
. Wooden panel (59 x 35 cm) with 25 bronze casts of ancient Chinese coins and amulets inserted. A solid piece of wood with small scratches and minor wear, parts of old Chinese label on reverse. Mounted in a later wooden frame. The collection shows examples of old coins and charms in the shape of spades, knives, rings, and two large symbolic figures: a horse and two birds in a tree. China was one of the first countries to use metal coinage and its ancient coin history can be traced back more than two thousand years. The Chinese also produced "coin-like" charms and talismans which were used to suppress evil spirits and to bring "good luck" or "good fortune". During the Zhou Dynasty (1046-256 BC) some of the first forms of money were cast in the shapes of tools, for example as spades, shovels or knives. Thereafter the "round money" appeared and during the Han Dynasty a round shaped coin named "wu zhu" was introduced. It was minted for more than 700 years from 118 BC to 618 AD. This panel contains nine spade-shaped coins or charms which we believe are the earliest examples in the collection. Two pieces have the knife shape. Three large examples of "open charms" are included with illustrations of a dragon, the zodiac and the eight trigrams. In addition there are seven pieces of different kinds of round coins or charms and two pendant charms, all decorated with different characters and symbols. We believe that the panel dates from the latter part of the 18th century and sits firmly in the context of the Emperor QianlongÕs unequalled obsession with Chinese history, art and literature. Reigning from 1735 to 1796, he created and conserved unparalleled collections of all ages and aspects of Chinese culture while honouring Manchu and Confucian traditions. This panel, with a patina consistent with its (likely) date, was probably used as a teaching aid, and reflects the EmperorÕs interest in promoting and preserving the glories and utility of the Chinese past. A most unusual and impressive work.

E di ciae, che gli avenne negli ultimi cinque mesi della sua vita. Roma, per Francesco Gonzaga, 1711.
. Small 4to. Pp. 70 and one folding engraved portrait. Contemporary vellum, "relazione" in ms on spine. First edition of a biographical study comprising three works of cardinal Maillard de Tournon who was the first papal legate sent to the Imperial court of China, on behalf of the Pope Clement XI. He was born in Turin in 1668 of a noble family of Savoy.Tournon and his party sailed by way of Pondicherry, Manila and Canton, arriving at Beijing in December 1705. At first Emperor Kangxi received him kindly, but upon realising that he had come to abolish the Chinese rites among the native Christians he had Tournon imprisoned at Macau where he later died, shortly after being informed that he had been created cardinal on August 1, 1707. Maillard de Tournon's mission is considered one of the crucial turning points in the modern history of the Chinese church. The two additional works are: "Verba per ... Clementem Papam XI. Habita in consistorio secreto fer. IV.14. Octobris 1711" (pp. 39-47); and Carlo Majelli's "Oratio habita in sacello pontifico V. Kal. Decembris A.D. M.DCC.XI" (pp. 48-70). Cordier BS 913-14. Backer & Sommervogel xi, 1285-6, no. 206 (who calls for 38 pages only = the first part).

SINOLOGUS BEROLINENSIS (Pseud.): Remarques philologiques sur les voyages en Chine de M. De Guignes. Berlin, aux frais de l'auteur et se trouve chez H.J. Hitzig [and others], Printed by Jean Frédéric Starcke, 1809.
. Pp. (ii), 168. With engraved frontispiece. Uncut copy in original printed wrappers, spine split. Bookplate (G.M. La Fragette). A work written by Montucci under his pseudonym which identifies more than two hundred linguistic errors in de Guignes' Voyages (1808). This was part of Montucci's maneuvre to persuade the French government to remove de Guignes from the editorship of the planned Chinese dictionary in favour of himself. Montucci, a renowned Italian sinologist, was obsessed with the idea of writing a Chinese dictionary. He had over 20 000 characters cut at his own expense which were subsequently bought by the Vatican, together with his collection of Chinese books. At one time Montucci was considered for editorship of the French-Chinese dictionary, but in the end preference was given to de Guignes. The work is preceded by a laudatory letter addressed to Antonio Montucci written by himself (under his pseudonym). In a postscript, the author provides information about the Chinese characters used in his work which is repeated at the end of a checklist. Scarce. Cordier BS 1711. Lust 994. Löwendahl 744. [DOTY, ELIHU]:
Some thoughts on the Proper Term, to be Employed to Translate Elohim and Theos, into Chinese: By an American Missionary in China. Shanghai, the Mission Press, 1850.
. Pp. 28. With printed Chinese characters. Original printed wrappers, soiled. This paper is a contribution to the contemporary missionary debate about the translation of the Christian concept of God into the Chinese language. Elihu Doty identifies the characters shang and ti most suitable for this. "Among the many intriguing episodes of the early Protestant missionary experience in China, none attracted as much attention or generated as much controversy as the 'Term Question'. Beginning as a simple difference of opinion over the most appropriate Chinese expressions to use for the English words 'God' and 'spirit' in translation of the Bible, the issue eventually split the missionary community into contending factions and brought a dramatic end to the united theological front that had hitherto shaped Protestant efforts to win the final victory for Christianity in China". Lazich (2000), p. 253.Elihu Doty (1809-64) was an American missionary who served in Singapore and Pontianak before moving to Amoy, where he remained from 1844 to 1858. Cordier BS 1283. Lust 951.
