Beautiful edition of this monumental work by Jan Luyken, 1649-1712. The print Bible contains illustrations of events from both the Old and New Testaments with accompanying descriptions by Pieter Langendijk, 1683-1756. Printed on generous paper, the work is illustrated with 5 fold-out maps, 62 double-page engravings, 61 of which are by Jan Luyken, and 30 engraved vignettes by Jan Luyken. The large engravings are numbered and all have a caption in Dutch and most also in French. The first edition of this work appeared in 1708, this second edition has been augmented with the accompanying text for each engraving and 5 maps and 30 vignettes from Mortier's 'Grooten Bybel' of 1700). MALBY|MINIATURE GLOBE

Terrestrial Globe.

London, Malby & Son, 1889. Miniature terrestrial globe made up of 12 hand-coloured engraved gores laid over a plaster sphere, with axis pins and brass meridian circle. Diameter 5 cm (2 inches), height 11 cm, in a mahogany stand. Contemporary hand-coloured, the countries in different colours and the seas in a green shade, it has been cleaned and varnished. Some dark spots at both axel pins. Malby & Co. (fl.1843-1860) was a family firm of 19th-century globe-makers in London, founded in the 1840s by Thomas Malby who took over the business of John Addison & Co. The Malby company's title was Globe Manufacturers and Publishers to the Society For The Diffusion Of Useful Knowledge, which was mentioned on each of their cartouches. The firm produced globes of 2, 12, and 18 inches in diameter and in 1849, they constructed the largest pair of globes ever made in England, the terrestrial of which was a reissue of Addison's Terraqueous Globe of 36 inches diameter, which was on display at the Great Exhibition. Malby's globes would later be reissued by the prolific London firm of Philip & Son (founded 1834). The exact identity of the engraver Charles Malby has not been established..

London, J. Manning, 1857. Miniature terrestrial globe with a diameter of 1,75 inches / 4,5 cm. This lovely miniature terrestrial globe consists of twelve copper engraved, hand coloured gores over a wooden base. The gores are varnished. The colouring is both subtle and original. With a central pin contained in a colourful card box. A little about miniature globes: The miniature or pocket globe was a British invention, introduced to the world by Joseph Moxon in 1673 when he produced a 3-inch globe. To own a pocket globe is to have the whole world in miniature. Pocket globes were never to be taken very seriously - they never served any practical purpose; their size makes accurate calculations impossible, and they tend to lack the rings and dials for most common manipulations. No, they were seen more as a status symbol, or a lovely decorative artistic artefact to reside on a gentleman’s desk or small table. There is a school of thought that some of the cheaper pocket globes may have aided children's education. Today, they reflect a lost and never-to-be-forgotten age of exploration and discovery.
