Goed exemplaar van de eerste druk van deze verdediging van de waarheid van de christelijke religie. Philippe du Plessis-Mornay, 1549 - 1623, was een Frans protestants theoloog, staatsman en leider van de hugenoten. Na zijn studie in Parijs diende hij onder Hendrik I van Bourbon-Condé in de Tweede Franse Godsdienstoorlog. Hij overleefde in 1572 ternauwernood de Bartholomeusnacht door naar Engeland te vluchten. Vervolgens ging Mornay werken voor Frans van Anjou en namens hem trad hij in contact met Lodewijk van Nassau over eventuele steun van de hertog aan de militaire campagnes in de Nederlanden. In 1576 trad hij in dienst van koning Hendrik van Navarra en deze zag het belang in van het slagen van de Nederlandse Opstand en leende daarom Mornay tot aan het jaar 1582 met enige regelmaat uit aan Willem van Oranje. Hij behoorde, samen met Marnix, Villiers en Taffin, tot de naaste medewerkers van de Prins. In 1589 werd Mornay aangesteld als gouverneur van Saumur waar hij een protestantse kerk liet bouwen en in 1593 een protestantse academie oprichtte. Hij bleef in zijn activiteiten zoeken naar religieuze tolerantie en hij was betrokken bij de totstandkoming van het Edict van Nantes in 1598. Toen de vervolgingen van protestanten weer op gang kwam tijdens de regering van Lodewijk XIII van Frankrijk werd zijn gouverneurschap hem ontnomen en ging Mornay met pensioen. Hij leefde tot aan zijn dood in zijn kasteel in de Poitou. Hij schreef naast enkele vlugschriften, gericht tegen Spanje, ook mee aan de Apologie van Willem van Oranje in 1580. Eigenaarsnaam en jaartal in oud handschrift op de titelpagina: Sum Ex Lib. Adam van Lockhorst Ao 1610. De adelijke familie Van Lockhorst kwam uit De Lier. Bekend is dat Prof. Gisbertus ab Isendoorn, 1601-1657, uit Harderwijk rond 1630 een aanbod van het Athenaeum Illustre, de illustere school uit Deventer, via zijn vriend Jacobus Revius om daar hoogleraar te worden, afsloeg, omdat hij Gouverneur was bij de familie Van Lockhorst in De Lier en verantwoordelijk voor de opvoeding van de twee zoontjes Van Lockhorst. Zeer waarschijnlijk behoorde dit boek dus toe aan de vader van deze twee jongens. (12) 287 (5) p. Contemporary vellum, 8°. Good copy of the first edition of this defense of the Christian religion. Philippe du Plessis-Mornay, 1549 - 1623, was a French Protestant theologian, statesman, and Huguenot leader. After studying in Paris, he served under Henry I of Bourbon-Condé in the Second French Religious War. He narrowly survived Bartholomew's Night in 1572 by fleeing to England. Subsequently, Mornay went to work for Francis of Anjou and, on his behalf, he came into contact with Louis of Nassau about possible support by the duke for the military campaigns in the Netherlands. In 1576 he entered the service of King Henry of Navarre, who saw the importance of the success of the Dutch Revolt and therefore lent Mornay regularly to William of Orange until 1582. He belonged, together with Marnix, Villiers, and Taffin, to the closest collaborators of the Prince. In 1589, Mornay was appointed governor of Saumur, where he had a Protestant church built and founded a Protestant academy in 1593. He continued to seek religious tolerance in his activities and was involved in the creation of the Edict of Nantes in 1598. When the persecution of Protestants resumed during the reign of Louis XIII of France, his governorship was taken away from him and Mornay retired. He lived in his castle in Poitou until his death. He wrote several pamphlets against Spain as well as the Apology of William of Orange in 1580. Binding a bit dirty. Owner's name and year in old handwriting on the title page: Sum Ex Lib. Adam van Lockhorst Ao 1610. The noble Van Lockhorst family came from De Lier. It is known that Prof. Gisbertus Ab Isendoorn from Harderwijk, 1601-1657, around 1630 turned down an offer from the Athenaeum Illustre from Deventer via his friend Jacobus Revius, to become a professor there because he was Governor of the Van Lockhorst family in De Lier and responsible for the education of the two Van Lockhorst sons. So it is very likely that this book belonged to the father of these two boys.  .

Cornelis Ploos van Amstel, 1726-1798, was houthandelaar en makelaar in schepen in Amsterdam, en een van de belangrijkste kunstverzamelaars uit de 18e eeuw. Hij vond een methode uit om prenten te maken naar tekeningen uit zijn eigen verzameling. Hendrik Goltzius (1558-1617), was een Nederlandse prentkunstenaar, tekenaar en schilder. Maria Tesselschade Roemers Visscher, 1594-1649, was de jongste dochter van Roemer Visscher. Ze was dichteres en maakte deel uit van de vriendenkring rond P.C. Hooft in het Muiderslot. Een prenttekening is een kunstwerk dat gemaakt is om een tekening na te bootsen, met behulp van een combinatie van grafische technieken..

Edward Pococke 1604-1691, was an English Orientalist and biblical scholar. He made himself master of Arabic, which he not only read but spoke fluently, studied Hebrew, Samaritan, Syriac, and Ethiopic, and associated of friendly terms with learned Muslims and Jews who helped him in collecting manuscripts. Pococke's observation of eastern manners and natural history served him in good stead as a commentator on the Old Testament (cf. his famous correction of 'wailing like the dragons' in Micah 1, into 'howling like the jackals') As a pastor he was devoted and indefatigable. The theological works of Pococke were collected in two volumes, and published in 1740 with a curious account of his life and writings by Leonard Twells.).

Delft, Reinier Boitet, 1723. 2 delen, (78) 1013, (50) 1015-1920 (86, 50) p. half Perkament, 4° (De ruggen van de banden zijn vernieuwd met behoud van de originele platten, de 2 laatste pagina's met drukfouten van deel 2 ontbreken.) Zeer zeldzaam werk van de Fransman Pierre Poiret, 1646-1719. Hij was een protestants aanhanger van het quiëtisme, mystiek schrijver, uitgever en studeerde o.a. theologie in Heidelberg. Poiret ontdekte de filosofie van Descartes, die hem beïnvloedde. Hij las ook Thomas a Kempis en Johannes Tauler en werd vooral beïnvloed door de Nederlandse mystieke Mennoniet Hendrik Jansen van Barrefelt, die als schrijver bekend geworden is onder de naam Hiël (1520 - 1594). Na verloop van tijd vestigde Poiret zich in Amsterdam en vervolgens in Rijnsburg bij Leiden, waar hij zich wijdde aan de publicatie van zijn eigen werken en die van geestesgenoten. Hij werd een enthousiaste aanhanger van de leer die gepredikt werd door Antoinette Bourignon, van wie hij de verzamelde werken publiceerde en de biografie schreef. Hij hield er niettemin gedeeltelijk andere zienswijzen op na. De 'Goddelyke Huishouding' beschrijft in 6 boeken een vrij complete systematische theologie waarbij Poiret uitgaat van het dispensationalisme, ook wel bedelingenleer genoemd. De bekende Duitse piëtist Gerhard Tersteegen, 1697-1769, erfde, als zijn belangrijkste discipel, de gehele bibliotheek van Poiret..

It's the most extensive edition of the great Polyglot Bible, the London Polyglot, or the Walton Polyglot after the compilator Brian Walton, 1600-1661. According to Brunet, this edition is the most sought after, being more complete and correct than the others, and containing nine different languages, with Ethiopian and Persian added to the seven languages of the Paris Polyglot. So it includes the text of the Bible in 9 different languages, Hebrew, Samaritan, Aramaic, Greek, Latin, Ethiopic, Syriac, Arabic, and Persian. All of the texts which are not in Latin are accompanied by Latin translations and all are arranged side by side or one over another on the two pages open before the reader. The first three volumes contain the Old Testament. They give the Hebrew text with the Samaritan Pentateuch, the Latin Vulgate, the Greek Septuagint, the Aramaic Targum, and the Syriac and Arabic paraphrases. The fourth part contains the Apocrypha and the Triplex Targum, i.e. Targumim I and II of Jerusalem and the Persian version of Jacob ben Joseph Tawus. The fifth volume is devoted to the New Testament, printed in Greek, Latin, Syriac, Arabic, and Ethiopian. Finally, the last section contains the critical apparatus. Fraaie, en grote gravure: Borstbeeld van voren in ovaal met het adres van Hugo Allard met 2 regelig Latijns onderschrift: Wilhelmus a Nassau Wilhelmi Filius Princeps Arausionum, etc. Willem Hendrik van Oranje, 1650-1702, was een soevereine prins van Oranje van het huis Oranje-Nassau sinds zijn geboorte. Hij bestuurde vanaf 1672 als stadhouder Holland, Zeeland en Utrecht en sinds 1675 ook Gelre en Zutphen en Overijssel, en ten slotte sinds 1696 ook Drenthe, in de Republiek der Zeven Verenigde Nederlanden. Vanaf 1689 regeerde hij ook als koning Willem III over Engeland (waartoe ook Wales behoorde) en Ierland. Willem was een protestant en mede daarom nam hij deel aan verschillende oorlogen tegen de machtige katholieke koning Lodewijk XIV van Frankrijk, in coalitie met de protestantse en katholieke machten van Europa. Veel protestanten riepen hem uit tot een voorvechter van het geloof. Grotendeels vanwege deze reputatie was Willem in staat om de Britse kronen te nemen, toen velen vreesden dat het katholicisme zou herleven onder Jacobus. Willems overwinning over Jacobus bij de Slag aan de Boyne in 1690 wordt herdacht door de Oranjeorde in Noord-Ierland en delen van Schotland tot op de dag van vandaag. Niet bij de RKD. De prenten zijn gegraveerd door Jacob Folkema, Pieter Tanje? en Simon Fokke. In het jaar 1791 werd de prentbijbel uitgegeven met bijgevoegde beschrijvingen door Van Hamelsveld. The printbible by Ysbrand van Hamelsveld which contains a titlepage, index and 126 folio sized leaves with 2 engravings on each.
