EDWARD FITZGERALD (TRANSLATOR), Rubáiyát of Omar KhayyáM - Facsimile Edition
EDWARD FITZGERALD (TRANSLATOR)
Rubáiyát of Omar KhayyáM - Facsimile Edition
London, The Folio Society. 2018, Illustrated Edition. Hardcover. Ill.: William Morris. Book, Very Good Condition, Hardcover in Slipcase, 32pp, Format: 17 x 12cm. This delightful little book is a mere 17.2 x 12.1cm in its maroon gilt titled cloth slipcase. It is a facsimile of the edition held in the British library (MS37832) that was exquisitely illustrated and transcribed by William Morris in 1872. It is only 32 pages long and printed in colour and gold ink throughout. The binding is maroon cloth gilt blocked on covers with an intricate design. Despite its size, it contains all 75 suras William Morris created four versions of the Rubáiyát and this Folio Society edition is based on the 1872 held by the British Library (Add MS 37832). The intricacy of the design on each calligraphed page is stunning, with recurrent patterns of delicate, nature-inspired motifs and exquisite classical and religious figures. Morris designed the borders and ornamental additions, sharing the work of the illustrations with fellow artist and designer Edward Burne-Jones - The figures were then painted in by Charles Fairfax Murray. This edition of one of William Morris's finest and most elaborate works is a complete facsimile of the manuscript, and includes a personal note by Morris at the end. Fine.

EDITED BY PROFESSOR ISRAEL GOLLANCZ - NEW FOREWORD BY GORDON MCMULLAN., A Book of Homage to Shakespeare
EDITED BY PROFESSOR ISRAEL GOLLANCZ - NEW FOREWORD BY GORDON MCMULLAN.
A Book of Homage to Shakespeare
Oxford, Oxford University Press. 2016, Special Edition. Hardcover. Book, As New, Hardcover Bound in Wibalin Cloth, 632pp + Illustrations Bound in Wibalin cloth Ribbon marker 632 pages 9 black & white illustrations 276 × 219mm On 23 April 1916, in the midst of the First World War, a magnificent volume edited by Professor Israel Gollancz was published by Oxford University Press. Entitled A Book of Homage to Shakespeare, it was created to mark the tercentenary of Shakespeare's death. Between an opening poem by Thomas Hardy about Stratford-upon-Avon and the London-based editor's closing paean to the global community - 'Shakespeare's own kindred, whatsoe'er their speech' - are 105 essays, dialogues and fragments and 61 poems, including 26 translations, from locations as far apart as America, Armenia, Burma, India, Ireland, Japan, Russia and South Africa. A Book of Homage to Shakespeare is a celebration both local and global, and marks a pivotal moment in literary history - a moment at which Shakespeare was the poet both of empire and of a world emerging into a new, very different global order. Now, 100 years later, Oxford University Press is reissuing this remarkable volume for the 2016 anniversary. It will reflect the style of the original 1916 edition and is presented with a new foreword by Gordon McMullan of King's College London. It tells the story of the book's inception and creation, focusing on its editor and guiding spirit, Israel Gollancz, and on certain key contributions. His lively account reveals A Book of Homage as a far more complex phenomenon than might be expected - at once a celebration of empire and an interrogation of Shakespeare's status as the uncontested figurehead of that empire. This is a unique title and a wonderful way to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death. The first copies are being delivered in March and we have been able to secure these at a special discount. As New.

GOOCH, JOHN, Army, State and Society in Italy 1870 - 1915
GOOCH, JOHN
Army, State and Society in Italy 1870 - 1915
London, MacMillan. 1989. Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, Good Condition, Hardcover + Dustjacket, 218pp Synopsis: This title in the series on 19th and 20th century military, naval and air history provides fresh interpretations of existing material and covers strategic, diplomatic, economic and financial issues. After the Unification of Italy, the Italian army faced the tasks of making and defending the nation. Increasingly preoccupied with domestic disorder at home it also struggled to create defences against hostile European powers. At the same time it fought two major colonial wars, and in one of them, suffered a catastrophic and ignominious defeat. Finally in 1915 it entered a war for which it was ill-prepared and in course of which it almost broke. Focusing particularly on the theme of professionalism, this book examines the problems faced by the army during these years, and helps to explain its later receptivity to Fascism. John Gooch has been editor of the "Journal of Strategic Studies" since its foundation and is Chairman of the Army Records Society. Very Good/Very Good.

EDITED BY ALASTAIR HAMILTON , EDITED BY MAURITS H. VAN DEN BOOGERT , ALEXANDER DE GROOT
Friends and Rivals in the East : Studies in Anglo-Dutch Relations in the Levant from the Seventeenth to the Early Nineteenth Century
Leiden, Brill. 2000. Hardcover. Book, 2000, As New, Hardcover, 258pp This volume, based on both European and Ottoman sources, investigates the commercial, military and diplomatic relations between the Dutch and the English in the Levant from the early seventeenth to the early nineteenth century. On the one hand there was a more or less constant commercial rivalry and there were moments of outright military hostility between the two powers. On the other a common life in the Near East led to a form of solidarity which transcended the political situation in the home countries. The role of the local population of the Levant, of Ottoman officials, and of the Greeks, Armenians and other eastern Christians who intervened both as merchants and as embassy dragomans or interpreters, was often decisive in influencing the dealings between the Dutch and English residents. The nine papers examine these different aspects of a relationship which has never before been studied in a Levantine context. Fine.
