The book takes stock of twentieth century theory regarding the Quest--as archetype, trope, and construct, considers the dominant expression and the imperial organization of this trope in Western culture and iconography from the Dark Ages to the Age of Empire, explores the ways in which this trope both lingers and changes in the context of Western Modernism, and finally gauges its permutations in Modern discourse. The Imperial Quest and Modern Memory's central claim is that the Modern novel simultaneously reinscribes and subverts Western and imperial manifestations of the Quest. Heart of Darkness, Passage to India, TheSheltering Sky, and The Quiet American are remarkably Modern and subversive narratives. They participate in the revolutionary projects of early and high Modernism and are often in marked opposition to imperial praxis. Yet they are also profoundly influenced by the deep ideological and metaphoric structures of Western culture. Thus, the Quest trope--specifically in its Western and imperial manifestations--lingers in Modern Memory and certainly in the Modern novel. Book, 1862, Good Condition, Half-Leather Binding with Marbled Boards & Gilt Spine Title & Decoration, xvi, 537pp, v Volume 29 from the series published by the Batavian Society of Arts and Sciences (Bataviaasch Genootschap van Kunsten en Wetenschappen) Light foxing to title-page, front & end Papers Jonathan Rigg was a British tea plantation entrepreneur and member of the Batavian Society of Arts and Sciences.who lived in southern Bogor. He compiled a Sundanese-English dictionary to take part in a competition to write a Sundanese dictionary that was more complete than Andries de Wilde's (1841). The organizer of the competition was Bataviaasch Genootschap van Kunsten en Wetenschappen and was announced by the secretary of the institution, Pieter Mijer, on 9 October 1843. Jonathan succeeded in compiling his dictionary in 1854, thirteen years after the publication of De Wilde's dictionary, or eleven years after Mijer's announcement. Moriyama said, "Rigg's Dictionary marks an era in the history of the Sundanese language. The British were successful in West Java, not the Dutch, and in this case it is not difficult to imagine the frustration felt by the Dutch. Although the Dutch had long paid attention to the East Indies and studied it, it was the English (Raffles, Crawford, and Rigg) who made the most important scientific contributions, especially regarding Sundanese.". Colwell analyzed the scribal habits in P45, P66, and P75, by examining their singular readings. This book expands on Colwell's work by studying P45, P46, P47, P66, P72, and P75, the six most extensive early New Testament manuscripts. All the singular readings in these papyri are studied along with all the corrections. The results, which incorporate many revised readings of these papyri, make possible the more precise use of these papyri in textual criticism.
