WATSON, WENDY M.
Italian Renaissance Maiolica from the William A. Clark Collection
Scala Books Ltd, London. 1986, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 0935748687). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (cloth with dust jacket); 21 x 28 cm; 0.950 Kg; 192 pages with colour and black-and-white illustrations.; Used in very good condition with minor signs of wear on the exterior.; Catalogue of a travelling exhibition organized by The Corcoran Gallery of Art and the Mount Holyoke College Art Museum.; "At its best, Italian maiolica seems as it were to concentrate the quintessence of all the qualities which go to make up the greatness and abiding charm of Italian art. Herein lies, I think, its unique fascination.". These words by the great art historian Tancred Borenius open the introduction to this catalogue, and the magnificent full colour illustration which follow reinforce this view. The exhibition here represented is the product of a collaboration between the Corcoran Gallery of Art, which possesses, in the Wiilliam A. Clark Collection, one of the richest and most comprehensive assemblages of Italian Renaissance maiolica in America, and the Mount Holyoke College Art Museum, whose curator, Wendy M. Watson, is a leading expert in this field and undertook to organize the project and produce the catalogue. The resulting exhibition is to travel, over a period of three years from Mount Holyoke to the museums of Northwestern University, the University of Wisconsin, Bowdoin College, and the University of Minnesota, as well as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Saint Louis Art Museum, the Gardiner Museum of Ceramic Art, The Museum of Fine Arts (Boston), and the Dayton Art Institute, before ending its tour at the Corcoran Gallery in Washington DC. The author's twenty-page introduction to the catalogue is a serious and thoughtful contribution to the history of this fascinating, and too little known, branch of Italian art. She also provides, for each of the seventy exhibits, a detailed individual description and commentary with provenances and bibliographical notes, often accompanied by one or more black and white illustrations as well as the full colour plate. The main entries are followed by a checklist of the remaining fifty works on the collection, each with a condensed descriptive note and a small black and white print for identification, and the critical apparatus is completed by a full bibliography at the end of the book. The result is a volume which will not only act as a catalogue to this outstandingly attractive and unusual exhibition, but should also hold its place as a reference work for scholars and students for many years to come. Good/Dust Jacket Included.

WATSON, WILLIAM
Pre-Tang Ceramics of China: Chinese Pottery from 4000 Bc to 600 Ad
Faber and Faber Limited, London. 1991, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 0571154336). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 20 x 25.5 cm; 1.062 Kg; 237 pages with black-and-white and colour illustrations; Used book with minor signs of wear, namely on the dust jacket.; China has the richest and most continuous tradition of ceramic production in the world. At their best, the early Chinese wares rival those of the Tang and Song periods for boldness and imagination, and for mastery of the technique in decoration, the shaping of forms and the use of materials, especially the wares of the powerful Han dynasty (206BC-221AD). Remarkable pieces from the two Zhou dynasties (1027-256BC) and from the Yangshao and Longshan neolithic periods (6th - 2nd millennium BC) also survive. Professor Watson's book, which makes extensive use of recent excavations and research in China, where many discoveries are being made, is the first comprehensive and authoritative book to have been written on this wide-ranging and important subject. In the six main chapters, attention is focused on the local evolution of the shapes and ornament of vessels in the main regions of China, that is, the north-central, north-east, north-west, central, south-east, south-west and southern regions. At the same time each chapter is divided into similar chronological sub-sections so that, for instance, the wares of the Eastern Zhou in the different regions can be compared. A strikingly unified historical development emerges, revealing how distinct early Chinese ceramics are from ceramics in other parts of Asia and in Europe. The book, which is illustrated with over 170 photographs and 260 line drawings, concludes with chapters on kilns and on shapes, models and figures. William Watson was Professor of Chinese art and archaeology at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, from 1966 to 1983, and also head of the Percival David Foundation, and he is a scholar of international standing with many important books to his credit. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included.

Tang and Liao Ceramics
Rizolli International Publications, Inc. New York. 1984. (ISBN: 0847805263). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (cloth with dust jacket); 29 x 32.8 cm; 2,690 kg; 283 pages. Includes 319 illustrations, of which 40 are in colour; Used book with minor signs of wear namely some small bumps on the hardcover cloth. The spine of the dust jacket is slightly faded. The interior is in very good condition.; Chinese ceramics of the Tang and Liao periods receive the most comprehensive examination in Western literature in this new study by one of the world's foremost scholars on Far Eastern art. William Watson describes and analyses all aspects of these extraordinary wares wholly from the evidence of the most recent excavations and Chinese archaeological studies appearing since 1949. No other history of the ceramics of this era has attempted so detailed a survey based on the latest findings. The ceramics of the Tang dynasty (618-907), through its lead-glazed pottery and its figurines, dramatically reflect the exchange of ideas that accompanied the expansion of Chinese influence into Central Asia. The mid-Tang period marked the beginning of a huge increase in trade - tea, salt and pottery were the main goods traded within China, and gradually the exchange of pottery came to assume an importance comparable to that of silk in the external trade with India and the Near East. There is nothing in earlier ceramics that compares with the fortuitous beauty of the splashed decoration on the Tang lead-glazed pieces or with the unpredictable ornament afforded by the suffused glazes on stoneware. At no other time in their history have Chinese potters played more boldly on their themes than during the Tang dynasty, and none of their heirs since has treated extravagance so lightly or has so well delivered the freshness that is expressed through such technical perfection. Against a background of native Chinese tradition, William Watson treats the exotic influences that give Tang art its distinctive character. The historical and technical aspects of Tang ceramics are thoroughly discussed with special attention to the types of wares and figurines with additional observation of works from the Sui and Five Dynasties periods. The author also devotes a special chapter to the ceramics of the Liao dynasty (947-1125), a Qidan empire bounded on the south by the Great Wall in northern Shanxi, on the east by northern Hebei and including the province of Liaoning and, broadly speaking, the whole of Inner Mongolia. Although the period of Liao rule overlaps with the Song government in China, Liao pottery is not a provincial manifestation of Song methods and styles, but in essential aspects shows the survival through the Liao period of types and techniques that prolong Tang-dynasty standards. William Watson was formerly head of the Percival David Foundation of Chinese Art in London and is the author of many standard works on Chinese Art. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included.

WELCH, STUART CARY
Persian Painting: Five Royal Safavid Manuscripts of the Sixteenth Century
George Blazier, New York. 1996. (ISBN: 0807608130). Soft cover. Book, English text.; Paperback.; 20.5 x 28 cm; 0.5 Kg.; 127 pages with colour illustrations.; Used book with signs of wear on the exterior, namely some scuffs. Interior in very good condition.; Classical painting flourished in Iran during the sixteenth century under the aegis of the Safavid Shahs. The forty-eight colour plates reproduced here represent the most unusual and dazzling miniatures painted during this period. A semi-nomadic people of luxuriant taste, the Iranian nobility created a life-style of world within magical world: brocade tents in which the Shah and his man feasted mid-battle were ptiched in the desert; palaces opened onto fountains and gardens; lovers, bathers, game-players, and warriors all had their place within a single panorama. The artists captured it all, often spending months filling in their small paintings with minute detail to render the whole world on a single page. With their unique techniques, they applied lapis lazuli, malachite, silver, and gold throughout their art. In these exquisitely portrayed settings, a world of great luxury and delicacy unfolds on every folio - each realized in the shimmering, jewel-like paintings that delight the eye and please the mind. The author traces the historical developments of Safavid Rule, provides commentaries on each painting, and clarifies the fine points. Good/No Jacket.

Biscuit: Refined Chinese Famille Verte Wares
Jorge Welsh Books. 2012, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 9780955743290). Hardcover. Book, English text; Hardcover; 240 pages, 197 colour illustrations, 7 black and white illustrations; 23.5 x 29.7 cm; 1,8 kg; May show signs of shelf wear.; Exhibition catalogue; Famille verte biscuit wares are an important but so far little-studied group of refined Chinese porcelain made at the imperial kilns of Jingdezhen primarily during the Kangxi period (1662-1722). This group is defined by both the method of decoration and the colour palette, which is frequently dominated by green enamel. Presenting an extremely diverse range of shapes, including figurines and animals, small practical items for use within the Chinese domestic environment and religious icons, this group is as complicated as it is fascinating. Together they open a window on Chinese culture and society, through which the production and consumption of Chinese ceramics can also be studied. Famille verte biscuit wares became increasingly fashionable for the European market at this time; while most were collected as curiosities, others were made directly for this market. Indeed, the production of famille verte biscuit wares reflects the particular circumstances of trade between East and West during this period. New.
