It is very cold. But underground, on the walls of the Liao dynasty tombs we visit, vibrant color and lively figures give warmth. A child climbs to grab fruit from a bowl, a woman pauses in a doorway, sprigs of flowers are painted on a tomb's dome, musicians play. The tomb objects from the ninth to the twelfth centuries in this exhibition are depicted on the walls of such chambers. Objects such as fine ceramic pots and bowls, tea services, and furniture present a story of daily life among people of the Liao and Song dynasties and how they thought of themselves. This is the first exhibition in the United States to present Liao culture in context." excerpt from the introduction by Susan Fillin-Yeh. Fine/No Jacket.

The dust jacket is now protected with a clearcover. Interior in very good condition with minor signs of wear.; Catalogue from the exhibition Nature Transformed: Wood Art from the Bohlen Collection held at: University of Michigan Museum of Art, Ann Arbor from June 12 - October 3, 2004; Mobile Museum of Art from October 7 - December 31, 2005; Museum of Art and Design, New York, 2006.; Artists working in wood are creating some of the most compelling contemporary art to be found in any medium, offering rich rewards for close investigation. Often deriving out of a functional past, much of today's wood art works as abstract sculpture, responding intuitively and uniquely to the rich and varied materials available to the wood artist. Nowhere is the vision, audacity, technical mastery, and sophistication of contemporary wood art better represented than in the collection of Robert Bohlen and Lilian Montalto Bohlen. Employing many different types of wood from the commonplace to the exotic as well as different carving, turning, and finishing techniques, the artists represented have created works that amuse, astonish, ans inspire. Their efforts broaden our understanding of what art can be and enrich our experience of the world around us, challenging us anew to think about materials, forms, and textures. Through essays and interviews that explore the evolution of wood art as well as current concerns and practices in the field. This book offers a comprehensive look at a unique contemporary art form at a vital moment in its evolution. Its publication is a welcome event for those who already know and love wood art - and a revelation to those who have not yet fully explored its possibilities. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included.

Jade Flowers and Floral Patterns in Chinese Decorative Art
The Chinese University of Hong Kong. 1969. Soft cover. Book, English text (includes summary in Chinese); Paperback; 19.2 x 26.7 cm; 0.585 Kg; 89 pages plus 48 pages of plates and 48 pages of figures. The plates and figures are in black and white.; Signs of wear on the cover, spine and back cover. The front and back cover are slightly rolling outwards. The interior has signs of wear but is in good condition.; "This paper is devoted to the study of a specialized group of carved jade flowers which is generally known as yu-hua in China. Most of the carvings are small in size, thin and light, and were originally used as units in jewelery or personal ornaments. The design of these small objects may seem simple, but the jade carvers have shaped them with great skill and understanding in their desire to make them attractive and impressive. Detached from the original ornamental works of bronze, silver or gold which were matched with pearls and other semi-precious stones, each remains an individual piece of art, full of subtle charm and beauty by itself. The majority are round in outline so they may be called appropriately "flower rosettes"." excerpt from the introduction. Good/No Jacket.

LIMITED EDITION OF 1500 COPIES OF WHICH THIS IS NUMBER 819.; The Topkapi Saray Museum collection of Chinese Ceramics is one of the largest and most important in the whole world, yet comparatively little of it has ever been published. The wares assembled here present a continuous review of porcelains made for export from the 13th century to the 19th century which, in its range of styles and designs, is without equal in any other surviving collection. With some 4,500 pieces dating from the Yuan and Ming dynasties, and a further 5,500 from the Qing, the present three-volume work covering the entire collection constitutes the most extensively illustrated book on Chinese ceramics yet published and provides an unrivaled source for dating and the study of design. The main part of the work consists of a complete and definitive catalogue in which every piece is itemised. Each entry is accompanied by one or more monochrome illustrations, scaled in size according to importance, and many are also shown in colour. The work contains 5,000 illustrations in all, of which 200 are large-size colour plates. The volumes divide the catalogue into three major sections, "Celadon Wares", "Yuan and Ming Porcelains" and "Qing Porcelains". These sections and their sub-divisions are arranged chronologically and are prefaced by extensive introductions by Regina Krahl and John Ayers. Virtually all the celadon wares are products of the famous Longquan kilns and the majority date from the 14th and 15th centuries; numbering in all some 1,350 pieces, they comprise the most extensive body of such material in existence. In blue-and-white and white wares of the 14th and early 15th centuries, too, which are widely regarded as the finest products of the Yuan and early Ming, the group of 125 pieces has no rival in size or quality, while the representation of later Ming export blue-and-white is rich in the extreme; the polychrome and monochrome classes of Ming ware also including some notable rarities. As for the Qing wares of all categories, these two comprise a uniquely extensive range of designs, still virtually unpublished, and of great value to students of Chinese porcelain. The first volume is introduced by a series of essays surveying the background to the collection and various aspects of the ceramics themselves. Dr. Unsal Yucel and Dr. Julian Raby throw new light on how porcelains both entered and left the palace, in what quantities and at what dates; Dr. Raby also contributes a penetrating examination of the nature of Ottoman taste in this field, showing how porcelain was regarded at the Court, and for what purposes and on what occasions it was used. Further important articles examine in detail the use of Chinese and Arabic marks on the porcelains. A full working bibliography, a concordance and a thorough index complete the work. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included.

The products of the application of this happy accomplishment have come to be called "Ming blue-and-white". After due consideration, of the style and quality of painting, the calligraphy of marks, the cutting of the foot, the shape as well as the paste and glaze of the vessels and comparison with shards, some of which are exhibited, the pieces have been catalogued and arranged in what is now thought to be the proper chronological order." excerpt from the introduction by Jean Gordon Lee, 1949.; "This exhibition covers the development of Chinese blue and white from the earliest wares, made at the beginning of the fourteenth century, up to the finest achievements of the Ming and Ch'ing dynasties and then to the decline which reached its lowest points at the end of the nineteenth century. During this period of six hundred years by far the greatest centre of manufacture of porcelain in China was the neighbourhood of Ching-tê Chên, in the province of Kiangsi, where all the Imperial and much of the non-Imperial porcelain was made. But a good deal of blue and white was made in other provinces, notably Fukien and Annam, and wares from both these provinces are represented in the exhibition. Blue and white from the other oriental countries, Korea and Japan, has not been included." excerpt from the introduction by Harry M. Garner, 1953. Very Good/No Jacket.

Ming Porcelains: A Retrospective
China House Gallery and The China Institute of America, New York. 1970. Soft cover. Book, English text.; Paperback; 20.5 x 23.5 cm; 0.3 Kg; 104 pages with black-and-white and colour illustrations throughout.; Used book with signs of of wear on the exterior, namely wear marks on front cover, spine and back cover. Interior in good condition.; Catalogue from a loan exhibition from Museum and Private Collections in the United States, October 29, 1970 through January 31, 1971.; "In assembling an exhibition such as this, one is governed by many factors - the paramount being availability of objects. It is not suggested, therefore, that this is a definitive catalogue of Ming porcelains but, rather, a fairly comprehensive sampling of the development of Ming decorative technique. An attempt has been made to illustrate the broad scope of Ming wares, from superb pieces of what is considered 'Imperial' quality to relatively crude export ceramics. Particular effort was made to secure pieces which offer comparison: to juxtapose examples of the identical technique from two or more different periods, and to demonstrate the evolution in the manner of drawing various decorative elements." excerpt from the preface by Suzanne G. The Dutch gasped at the beauty of it all and enthusiastically incorporated these treasures into their hitherto more modest interiors. In essays and entries by over thirty expert authors, this catalogue examines how a culture of luxury developed in the Golden Age. New.
