SUCHOMEL, FILIP
300 Treasures: Chinese Porcelain in the Wallenstein, Schwarzenberg & Lichnowsky Family Collections
Umprum, Academy of Arts and, Architecture & Design in Prague. 2015, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 9788086863665). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (cloth with dust jacket); 25.3 x 31.9 cm; 3.1 kg; 510 pages with colour illustrations, decorative endpapers. Includes ribbon bookmark.; STILL WRAPPED IN PLASTIC.; Chinese porcelain ware is contained in many major art collections worldwide. The Czech Republic also has interesting collections, which, however, have not previously been very well known to the wider public. The boom in the trade of Chinese porcelain is linked to the discovery of the trade routes to China in the 16th century. Porcelain then became a popular artistic item that adorned the residences of the richest aristocrats in other European countries, as well as in our country during the reign of Emperor Rudolf II. Chinese porcelain can be found in a number of Czech castle and palace collections. The largest of these are mainly gathered in the former Waldstein, Schwarzenberg and Lichnowsky dominions. This publication is the result of the research project: "Chinese Applied Art from the Czech Collections", which aimed to professionally explore collections of Chinese applied art, artistic crafts, vernacular art and ethnography collected in Czech castles, palaces and regional museums. New/Dust Jacket Included.

SULLIVAN, MICHAEL
The Arts of China
Thames & Hudson, United Kingdom. 1973. (ISBN: 0500231915). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 16,5 x 25 cm; 1 Kg.; 256 pages with 235 illustrations, 14 in colour, and 34 diagrams and maps.; Used with signs of wear.; New and revised edition of 'A Short History of Chinese Art, published by Faber and Faber in 1967.; Michael Sullivan presents a balanced picture of the arts of China from the Stone Age to the present day. It has grown out of the author's Introduction to Chinese Art, which first appeared in 1961 and was reissued in a revised edition in 1967 under the title of 'A Short History of Chinese Art'. Since then, the pace of archaeological discovery and research has quickened, some of the most sensational finds having been made at the height of the Cultural Revolution in 1966-68, when to the outside world it seemed for a time as if China had turned her back on cultural heritage. These new developments, which have been watched by admirers of Chinese culture with increasing excitement , have necessitated a completely new edition of the book, incorporating material on some of the most important new finds, and a reassessment of well-known material in the light of these discoveries and of the author's own further studies and thoughts. There is a new chapter on the twentieth century, and the number of illustrations has been almost doubled. Unlike some other books on Chinese art, which treat each art form separately, or break off long before the modern period, this book covers all the major arts, and some of the minor ones, in a continuous narrative. For the author still believes that only by seeing the arts of China in relation to each other and to the sweep of Chinese history as a whole can their meaning and beauty be measured. Good/Dust Jacket Included.

Book, English text; Paperback.; 15,5 x 24 cm; 1 Kg.; 256 pages with 235 black and white and colour illustrations throughout.; Used with signs of wear. Includes signature of previous owner and a bookseller stamp glued on front free endpaper.; New and revised edition of 'A Short History of Chinese Art, published by Faber and Faber in 1967.; The Arts of China paints a fascinating and balanced picture of the unique artistic achievements of the Chinese people from the Stone Age to the present day. Since this book appeared in 1967 under the title A Short History of Chinese Art, the pace of archaeological discovery and research has quicked and some of the most sensational findings took place at the height of the Cultural Revolution in 1966-8, when it seemed to the outside world as if China had turned her back on her cultural heritage. In this revised edition, Michael Sullivan describes these exciting discoveries, which include the finding of the bronze weapons used by members of the Shang Dynasty (1500- BC-1027 BC) and of the exquisite tomb of Liu Sheng, a prince of the Han Dynasty (206 BC-220 AD), and his wife Tou Wan. In the light of these discoveries he has reassessed the history of all the major Chinese arts and crafts from the magnificent painted pottery of the Neolithic period to the painting, operas and ballets of The People's Republic today. FORRER, MATTHI; WITH ESSAYS BY JUZO, SUZUKI AND D, SMITH II, HENRY
Hiroshige: Prints and Drawings
Prestel Verlag, Munich. 2011. (ISBN: 9783791345406). Soft cover. Book, English text; Paperback; 20 x 24.6 cm; 1 Kg; 256 pages with colour Illustrations throughout; Catalogue from the exhibition held at the Royal Academy of Arts, London from the 3rd of July to the 28th of September 1997.; Used with signs of wear on the exterior. Interior as new.; Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) holds an assured place in the history of world art as one of the greatest and best-loved masters of the woodblock print. Together with Katsushika Hokusai, he is the leading creator of landscape imagery in japanese printmaking. Acclaimed in the West as "the artist of mist, snow and rain", Hiroshige certainly possesses a poetic sensibility particularly well attuned to evoking atmospheric effects. Hiroshige is a master of the passing moment, subtly orchestrating a wide range of colours to articulate mood. Including maps, a chronology, glossary and bibliography, this volume offers an excellent introduction to the mainly-sided oeuvre of an artist who, perhaps more specifically "Japanese" than Hokusai, was described by Pisarro as a "marvellous Impressionist". Money, Finance, and Macroeconomic Performance in Japan
Yale University Press, New Haven and London. 1986, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 0300033877). Hardcover. Book, English text.; Hardcover (without dust jacket); 16 x 24 cm.; 0.55 Kg.; 218 pages.; Used with signs of wear, namely on the outside text block. He has been personally involved in the activities about which he writes, and he knows many of the actors. Much of the book will be of special interest to mathematicians, economists, and bankers. The work also treats several topics of more general interest. Suzuki explains why Japan has built up such extremely high foreign trade surpluses, stating: "Postwar economic policy was constructed with investment/export-led growth as its strategic objective. The important elements in the policy were trade and foreign exchange management, protection of industry, and tax treatment favoring saving and investment." review by Howard F. Koehler & Amelang, Germany. 2010, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 3733802357). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 18 x 25.6 cm; 0,7 Kg; 176 pages with colour illustrations.; Used book with signs of wear on the exterior. Interior with minor signs of wear.; Between 1723 and 1730 August the Strong - Elector of Saxony and King of Polland - had the "Green Vault", a unique collection of European arts and crafts, established in the rooms of his residential palace in Dresden. A major portion of these art treasures is today displayed in the Albertinum Museum. The select representative objects, shown primarily in new photographs in this pictorial volume, reflect the opulent splendor of exquisite exotic materials and the sensuous charm of each individual artwork. Some masterpieces are published here for the first time; others are represented from a unique viewpoint which results in surprising new insights. Noble boxes were opened by the photographer so that the viewer could catch a glimpse of their interior designs. Or the camera circles around a bronze group and in so doing captures its dance-like motion. Numerous selective enlargements exhibit the artful workmanship of the objects down to the smallest detail - features which are as fascinating today as they were at the time of creation. TENG, EMMA JINHUA
Taiwan's Imagined Geography: Chinese Colonial Travel Writing and Pictures, 1683-1895
Harvard University Asia Center, Cambridge (Massachusetts) and London. 2004, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 0674014510). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text.; Hardcover (with dust jacket).; 16 x 23.5 cm; 0.7 kg; 370 pages with a few illustrations.; Used with minor signs of wear. The dust jacket is now protected with a clearcover.; Harvard East Asian Monographs 230.; Until 350 years ago, the Chinese considered Taiwan a "savage island" beyond the pale of Chinese civilization. When the Qing conquered the island in 1683, the court debated the value of colonizing this "ball of mud". Yet, two centuries later, in 1895, Chinese writers lamented the island's cession to Japan as a loss of sacred national territory. Taiwan's trajectory from "savage island" to China's "sovereign territory" is the subject of this book. The author argues that colonial travel writing, ethnographic illustrations, and maps were central to this transformation and that traveler's representations of Taiwan played a vital role in expressing and producing Chinese ideologies of imperial expansion and race. At the same time, travel writing and images of the frontiers transformed the imagined geography of the Chinese empire itself, as the Qing doubled the empire's territory. By representing distant lands and frontier peoples to audiences in China proper, these works converted places once considered non-Chinese into familiar parts or the empire. They dramatically changed the idea of the geographic and ethnic boundaries of "China" - creating the imagined geography behind PRC conceptions of China's "sovereign territory" and its claims to places like Taiwan and Tibet. This book challenges prevailing preconceptions of the "colonizer" and "colonized" by examining a non-Western imperial power and its representations of colonial "others" and suggests the possibility of meeting points between Western and Chinese colonial discourses. This work further debunks the notion that Taiwan has been a part of China since antiquity by showing how the Taiwan-China relation emerged from the history of Qing colonialism. The dust jacket is now protected with a clearcover.; Catalogue of an exhibition of one hundred selected pieces of Chingtechen Porcelain of the Ming and Ch'ing Dynasties from the Collection of the T.Y. Chao Family Foundation.; "This present exhibition tries to portray the achievements of the potters of Chingtechen, the largest and the most important porcelain production centre in China. Of the twenty-one major kilns throughout the whole history of Chingtechen, fifteen belonged to the period from the Hung Wu era (1368-1398) to the Ch'ien Lung era (1736-1796), showing that the peak period of porcelain production at Chingtechen covered the greater part of the Ming Dynasty and the first half of the Ch'ing Dynasty. The one hundred selected items of fine Chinese ceramics in this exhibition were all produced during this peak period. Hence, they represent the major types and forms of porcelain wares produced by the Chingtechen kilns at their best, and were selected from the collection of the T.Y. Chao Family Foundation. They are all of a quality hard to excel." excerpt from the preface by Laurance C.S. TAM, Curator, Hong Kong Museum of Art. Good/Dust Jacket Included.

Collecting for the Public, Works That Made a Difference: Essays for Peter Hecht
Paul Holberton publishing, London. 2016, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 9781911300045). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 21.6 x 26 cm; 1.267 Kg; 240 pages with 90 colour illustrations; This book celebrates a great champion of our public collections. Peter Hecht is probably best known as an art historian who has specialized in Dutch art of the seventeenth century, with a focus on its iconography and critical fortunes. His interests, however, are wide-ranging and include the history of museums and the development of public collections in the Netherlands. Throughout his career, Hetch has worked to show us why museums matter and how their collections, large or small, national or local, can make a profound difference to the lives of those who use them. As a scholar, he has shared his understanding of how collections are formed; as an expert advisor he has influenced the fate of numerous potential acquisitions; and more recently, as a curator, he has put his knowledge into practice both in a museum setting and online, helping to animate enthusiasm for the depth and breadth of collections across the Netherlands. Perhaps above all, as a passionate believer in the power of objects, he has campaigned to keep ambitions at the highest level, reminding us that no collection, however great, is ever complete and that it is always possible to do better. In this book a number of museum curators and other art historians shine their light on one or more acquisitions that have made a difference in the collections they entered, explaining why this is so and how these purchases or donations happened - from medieval to modern. We hope that this will bring people the world over to realise the importance of collecting for the public, locally, nationally and internationally and to acknowledge and encourage the role of private individuals, associations and institutions, as well as public bodies, in this vital endeavour. Book, Chinese and English text.; Hardcover (without dust jacket - as issued).; 23.5 x 31 cm; 1.3 kg; 199 pages with colour illustrations throughout.; Used with signs of wear on the exterior. Interior as new.; Catalogue from the exhibition co-presented by the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region Museum and the University Museum and Art Gallery of the University of Hong Kong from 13 December 2008 to 15 of March 2009.; "The northwest Silk Road was the most important overland route linking ancient China with the outside world in the one thousand five hundred-period, spanning the Han (206 BCE-CE 220) to the Yuan (1271-1368) dynasties, Over this long period, foreigners and other non-Chinese ethnic minorities entered Gansu via Xinjiang, turning southeast towards Ningxia and Shaansi, and the ancient Tang capital of Chang'an. The Silk Road was the result of political and military endeavour. Begun during the Han dynasty to combat the Huns, it was also important during the Tang dynasty (618-907) in opposing the Turks. The Ningxia section of the route had particular strategic significance because of its proximity to the political and economic centre of Chang'an, thus control over the area was hotly contested between the Han Chinese and non-Chinese ethnic minorities. Relics found along the Silk Road include Indian Buddhist sculptures, Persian-Sassanian motifs and images of the whirling dervish dance of Samarkand. Buddhist painting by Cao Zhongda, a Sogdian from Kabudhan (Gubdan), north of the Zerafshan River, of the Northern Qi dynasty (550-577), are characterized by the depiction of pleated garments that drape the body closely, as if the figure were emerging from water. This "Cao Style" greatly influenced Chinese Buddhist art." excerpt from the foreword by YEUNG Chun-rong, Director, University Museum and Art Gallery, The University of Hong Kong, 11 November 2008. TREGEAR, MARY
Song Ceramics
Thames & Hudson, Ltd, London. 1982, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 0500233462). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (cloth with dust jacket); 29 x 32.8 cm; 2,564 kg; 262 pages. Includes 317 illustrations, 42 in colour, and 35 maps and line drawings.; Used book with signs of wear namely on the dust jacket that has small tears and scuffs. Interior in very good condition. The dust jacket is now protected with a clearcover.; The three centuries spanned by the Song (Sung) dynasty, 960-1278, saw a brilliant flowering of the art of the potter in China. Two major factors behind this development were aesthetic appreciation of fine design and workmanship shown by the Song court and the rise of China as a maritime power in the eleventh century, providing the opportunity for the expansion of foreign trade. Thanks to the widespread demand for high-quality wares, output was greatly increased in this period. Today surviving specimens are still greatly appreciated by collectors and connoisseurs for their outstanding elegance and sophistication, as well as being a source of inspirations for leading studio-potters. In this important study the author describes in detail the historical background and development of Song-dynasty ceramic styles, executed largely in stoneware. There are illustrations of numerous outstanding pieces from collections throughout the world. Characteristic examples have been chosen to represent the wide variety of forms and styles of decoration, whether painted, incised or impressed, produced at leading kiln sites in both north and South China, as well as Korean celadon and other wares inspired by Chinese originals. Although many kilns had existed for a century or more before the beginning of the Song dynasty, specialization was a new phenomenon and wares began to be specifically named for the first time, e.g. Ding ware, Yaozhou ware, Ru ware - names which have remained in use ever since. Characteristic shapes identified with certain kilns are shown in the line drawings, and all the forms potted - from meiping vases to cup-stands and incense burners - are discussed in the context of the individual wares. Glazes, generally thick and sometimes featuring internal bubbles or enhanced by crackle, are at this period still generally restrained in color but often enliven the otherwise sombre character of the major wares, and the distinctive characteristics of the various styles are clearly seen in the individual illustrations. With this detailed maps of kiln sites, glossary of technical terms, bibliography, chronological table and detailed notes on the illustrations, this book is an essential guide to all aspects of the enormous ceramic output of those anonymous Song potters whose work is still held in such high reward seven centuries later.
