HERVOUET, FRANCOIS; HERVOUET, NICOLE; AND BRUNEAU, YVES
La Porcelaine Des Compagnie Des Indes a Décor Occidental
Flammarion, Paris. 1986, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 2080109901). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, French text; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 25 x 33.9 cm; 2.76 Kg; 432 pages with 1206 illustrations, 100 in colour.; Minor signs of wear on the front cover, spine and back cover of the dust jacket.; This reference book almost functions as an encyclopaedia, identifying and providing possible dates to a very large range of western scenes painted on Chinese porcelain, commissioned through the East India Companies and that arrived in Europe, and later in the United States, during the 18th century. The idea of asking craftsmen of the Middle Kingdom to paint porcelain according to their own taste emerged very early in the minds of those Europeans who travelled to the Far East. For example, to paint a boat on which they had been sailing for six months on a bowl, or to reproduce an engraving, the portrait of a loved one, among others. In short, Westerners asked for anything that, for one reason or another (and the diversity of orders is incredible), was important to perpetuate through time in an original way. As they returned to their homelands, bringing with them these beautiful objects that had been specially ordered to Chinese artists and that were very much cherished, these began to be used or functioned as memory tokens. Although several books have been written about Chinese export porcelain, particularly since the Second World War, it should be noted that no book had aimed at functioning as an 'inventory' of western decoration on Chinese porcelain destined to the western market. This book intends to serve as a catalogue of all the decorations ordered to be painted on porcelain by the East India Companies of all of the countries. With a short margin of error, we estimate that there should be no more than 1.300 different representations around the world and this book assembles about nine-tenths. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included.

Book, French and English text; Hardcover (with dust jacket).; 24 x 28 cm; 1,2 Kg; 165 with colour illustrations.; Used book with signs of wear on the dust jacket, namely chips and tears. The dust jacket is now protected with a clearcover. Interior in very good condition.; Containing fifty four objects covering the 17th through the 19th centuries and illustrating the princely arts of Mughal India, of the Deccani sultanates and of the Rajput kingdoms, as well as twenty jewels from Northern India, the Jean and Krishnâ Riboud donation represents an incredible endowment for the Guimet museum's Indian collections. There are translucent jade and rock crystal cups enriched with rubies and emeralds, chalcedony and jade dagger handles sprinkled with precious stones, flasks and powder horns made from exquisitely carved ivory, spice boxes and huqqa bases with enamelled decorations, artefacts made from shimmering mother of pearl, copper or silver encrusted bidri, vanished terracotta tiles with vegetable decorations, as well as sumptuous jewelry combining the brilliance of gems with the sparkle of polychrome enamels; all these artefacts add up to an amazingly seductive evocation of the sophisticated splendour of the courtly arts in the Indian kindgoms. OORT, H.A. VAN
Chinese Porcelain of the 19th and 20th Centuries
Uitgeversmaatschappij De Tijdstroom b.v. Lochem, The Netherlands. 1977, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 9060876407). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 17 x 25 cm; 0.542 Kg; 198 pages with black-and-white and colour illustrations.; The dust jacket has minor chips, tears and scuffs. The dust jacket is now protected with a clearcover. The interior is in very good condition.; Between the reign of Chia-Ch'ing and the Japanese invasion in 1937 much porcelain was made in China, albeit of very diverse quality. It is, in fact, a strange phenomenon that, up to now, most experts have neglected this span of approximately 150 years during which so many interesting pieces were made. In this book the author makes an attempt, for the first time, to bring order into the porcelains of the various periods concerned and to show their interrelationships as well as their relationships to earlier periods. Some of the porcelain is undoubtedly rather poor, but many pieces, especially those produced during the second and third decades of this century, are of superior quality. Highly interesting developments are recorded in the production of porcelain at this time, which reaches an astonishing peak of excellence during the Hung-hsien reign-period in 1916. Even during the years of upheaval after this year porcelain of great interest continued to me made. The most important aspects of this book are the many illustrations, the abundance of hitherto unpublished marks - which will allow collectors to determine many pieces - and the exhaustive index. Good/Dust Jacket Included.

OORT, H.A. VAN
The Porcelain of Hung-Hsien: A Study of the Socio-Cultural Background and Some Characteristics of the Porcelain Produced at Chingtechen During the Imperial Reign of Yüan Shih-K'Ai (1916)
N.V. Uitgeversmaatschappij De Tijdstroom Lochem. 1970, 1st Edition. Hardcover. Book, English text.; Hardcover (with dust jacket).; 16.5 x 24.5 cm.; 0.831 Kg.; 301 pages with black and white and one colour illustrations.; Used with signs of wear, namely on the dust jacket that has a tear on the back cover. Signs of wear on the interior. Overall in good condition. The dust jacket is now protected with a clearcover.; The object of this book is to broaden the range of aesthetic enjoyment in the field of Chinese porcelain. First of all the writer has dealt once and for all with the myth that after Ch'ien-lung almost no porcelain worthy of our attention was produced any more. Secondly, it was shown that the revival in the porcelain industry at the end of the Ch'ing dynasty obtained a heavy stimulus from Yuan Shik-k'ai, the first President of the Republic of China. This culminated in the production of very fine porcelain bearing the reign mark HUNG-HSIEN of his usurped emperorship in 1916. Finally we see that after the death of Yuan Shik-k'ai the porcelain production did not suddenly come to a standstill but instead continued to turn out ware that can rival some of the best pieces of the past. In order to corroborate this point of view, the revival of porcelain art is discussed against the background of social and cultural change. In particular attention is drawn to the importance these high technical achievements have for the production of porcelain marked with better known reign marks of previous periods. The thesis set forth in the book is elucidated by illustrations covering each period from the middle of last century right up to the People's Republic. Good.

PERRY, LILLA S.
Chinese Snuff Bottles: The Adventures & Studies of a Collector
Charles E. Tuttle Company: Publishers, Rutland, Vermont & Tokyo, Japan. 1971, 5th or later Edition. (ISBN: 0804801061). Hardcover. Book, English text; Hardcover (lacks the dust jacket); 25.5 x 26 cm; 0.94 Kg; 158 pages with black and white and colour illustrations.; Used book with signs of wear, namely marks of an old sticker removed in the front free endpaper. The hardcover cloth shows also signs of a removed old sticker. The interior is in good condition with no writing or highlighting. Good readable copy.; Few civilizations can boast such a great range and quality of artistic achievement as can the Chinese. The Chinese genius has created a vast store of masterpieces in almost every art form, ranging from monumental cave sculptures to the varied products of skilled artisan - generally classified among the "minor arts". It is in this area of the minor arts that the Chinese have particularly distinguished themselves in the more recent past of their long history. The full flowering of all the arts and crafts during this seventeenth and eighteenth centuries represents, in a way, the crowning accomplished of Chinese art, which subsequently entered a period of general decline. In the words of one commentator, as quoted in the present text: "Probably at no time or place in the history of the world there were craftsmen more active, more ingenious, more encouraged than in the China of Ch'ien Lung (1736-95). Manipulating with equal dexterity every kind of material, metals, stone, pottery, wood, horn, leather, amber, lacquer, mother-of-pearl, the output of their myriads of looms, lathes, kilns, and workshops was amazing in quantity, endless in variety..The abundance was so great that after 130 years of the most reckless wear and tear, the mere remnants still gladden an impoverished world with glimpses of the old enchantment.". This, then, is the period that coincided with the introduction and popularization of snuff in China, and consequently with the development of the snuff bottle. All the skill's and ingenuity of the Chinese artisans were lavished upon the production of these tiny bottles, making them pre-eminent representatives of the best in Chinese craftsmanship. The present work is the first full account in any language of this facet of Chinese art. It includes a comprehensive treatment of the origins and development of the snuff bottle in China as well as over 150 actual-size reproductions, the majority in full color. It is a fascinating story by an enthusiastic collector, who, captivated by the beauty and ingenuity found in these bottles, had the interest to delve into historical background, techniques of manufacture, kind and quality of materials, classification and organizations of types, and the like, as well as a delightfully informal style with which to communicate her wide knowledge and enthusiasm to the reader. As such the book is not only and invaluable document for all interest in the history of Chinese art, but also a lucid and fascinating guidebook for the collector, or would-be collector, both of snuff bottles and of other products of Chinese craftsmanship.
