Book, Lengths and Levels to Bradshaw's Maps of the Canals Navigable Rivers and Railways in the principal part of England dedicated to Thomas Telford published by Riff London 1833 (50 pp.) bound with a Description of a Plan for a Central Union Canal which will lessen the distance and expense of canal navigation between London and Birmingham by W Cubitt published by Roake and Varty London 1832. (7 pp). In stiff boards size 22 by 14 cm. A detailed reference work. The first work- the Bradshaw -is divided into 3 sections of data on gradients lengths etc.The first of these covers the railways and canals in the north of England; the second covers navigable rivers and canals as far south as the Thames and Severn and the third part gives details of the lengths and levels of canals navigable rivers and railways in the south. With two folding maps: of a continuation of the Lea Navigation & the River Stort a continuation of the Grand Junction and the proposed London & Birmingham canals (uncoloured); and the Central Union Canal (some hand-colouring). The intention was to have this information in order to interpret the early Bradshaw maps of railways and canals. A closed nick to spine and minor bumping to edges of boards but overall VG condition. Book, Lengths and Levels to Bradshaw's Maps of the Canals Navigable Rivers and Railways in the principal part of England dedicated to Thomas Telford published by Ruff London 1833 (50 pp.) bound with Extracts from the Minutes of Evidence given before the Committee of the Lords on the London and Birmingham Railway Bill, London 1832 (66 pp). In stiff cloth-covered boards size 21.5 by 14 cm. The lengths and levels are taken from a datum of six feet ten inches under the sill of the old dock gates at Liverpool. The intention was to have this information in order to interpret the early Bradshaw maps of railways and canals. With two folding maps in a pocket in the rear endpapers: of a continuation of the Lea Navigation & the River Stort, a continuation of the Grand Junction, and a map of the proposed London & Birmingham Railway with a section of the line by George Stephenson (old tape repair to a fold). Published by Bradshaw Manchester 14th of January 1839. On folding linen in 49 sections size 163 by 103 cm. Scale approximately ten miles to the inch. With 33 gradient sections of the major lines and an inset map of the railways around London plus a decorative compass rose. Hand coloured. A large and detailed map of the railway network at the start of 1839. Folds into stiff cloth-covered boards with marbled endpapers. Bound complete with the Tables of the Gradients to Bradshaw's Map of the Railways containing particulars of the lengths levels and gradients of all of the principal railways of the kingdom a 26-page section of text and data with index. The front board has a gold-stamped title and decoration. Folds into decorated boards with gold-stamped title to front and spine. Original spine relaid. Slight offsetting below the title of the map. With the signature of J P Westhead of Manchester above the title in the printed tables section. Westhead was a prominent Manchester industrialist and local politician who served as a director of the London and North-Western Railway. VG condition. Images available.
