"It will be seen, involves the question of the Male Representationship of the ancient Sovereigns and Princes of the isles; for whoever is Heir Male of Ranald of the Isles Founder of Clanranald, is also the Male Representative of his remote Ancestor Donald of the Isles, Grandson and Heir of Somerled first King of the Isles, after whom the Macdonalds are surnamed at the present day. It is well known that the descendants of Somerled (who lived in the 12th century) were Sovereign Princes, and treated as such by Foreign Powers."

Seventeenth-century genealogies/family trees of London and surrounding county families (out as far as Staines) from Awsiter to Wicks and including Bonfoy, Brigginshaw, Comyn, Mayo, Merrick, Otger, Pagitt, Swynerton, Treswallen, Wilding, etc. Munby (III, p.12) corrects the date of publication to 1821. Printed for S. Baker and G. Leigh, 1768. First edition, [4],viii,257,[1]pp., with half-title and engraved frontispiece, cont. half calf, marbled paper boards, hinges slightly cracked, head and foot of spine worn with some light worming to raised bands, marbled paper on lower board peeling, but overall internally a clean and bright copy. Of the first work Hill notes "This account of John Byron's circumnavigation is usually ascribed to midshipman Charles Clerke, who later sailed on all three of Captain Cook's voyages...". Of the second work, Byron was midshipeman aboard the Wager when it was wrecked off the Chilean coast, and he provides a vivid account of the privations endured by the survivors. The author's grandson Lord Byron drew upon the Narrative as a source for his epic poem 'Don Juan'. Hill, 311 & 232.

Baron Pierre Charles François Dupin (178-1873) was a French Catholic mathematician, engineer, economist and politician, particularly known for work in the field of mathematics. In 1816, after some difficulty, Dupin was allowed to visit Great Britain to study its commerce and industry. This work is the result which placed him in the foremost rank of statisticians. "In the following work, I have endeavoured to exhibit the full extent of the Military and Naval Forces which the government of Great Britain can bring into the field, or launch upon the ocean... My observations on these subjects were derived from a residence of five years in England; during which time I was constantly employed in visiting and viewing every object and institution worthy of notice relative to the British Army and Navy."
