¶ Extracted from the Journal of the Linnean Society, Botany, vol. 16. John Ball (1818-1889) Irish politician and naturalist. Ball was a member of the Royal Society and first president of the Alpine club. Ball produced a comprehensive Alpine guide in three volumes (1863–1868). He also wrote A Tour in Morocco and the Great Atlas (1879, with Joseph Dalton Hooker ) and Notes of a Naturalist in South America (1887), as well as the above botanical field Spicilegium floræ maroccanæ (1878),
